Going Green With Green Baby Gifts

How can you go green with green baby gifts? What are the best types of green baby gifts to give? There are 3 general ways of going green when shopping for babies:
1) Buy gifts that are good for the environment,
2) Give gifts that are environmentally friendly as well as healthy for the baby, and
3) Green your shopping and giving habits.

1) Buy baby gifts that are good for the environment. Buy products that are made from recycled material and are easily recyclable. Bamboo products are a new and good trend. Clearing bamboo releases a lower level of carbon into the atmosphere. It is easily replaced and it grows fast. It’s also very biodegradable.

2) Environmentally friendly and healthy gifts for your baby are another way of going green. Shop for organically made clothing, made with non-toxic materials. Baby’s bodies are especially susceptible to toxins in the air. Brain research shows that the first 6 months of a child’s development are the most crucial and the brain needs fresh air, good nutrition, and a safe environment throughout childhood.

3) Green your shopping and giving habits. Save gas and energy by shopping online. You can often find special deals only available online. When in doubt, give gift certificates. These saving on packaging, travel, and give the freedom for your friends to spend more money on their babies in the way they want. There are many great Organic and environmentally-friendly products for babies (to check out some of these gifts, follow me through the resource box below). Use recycled wrapping paper. Instead of wrapping paper, use ribbons. A lot of gifts look great with only a ribbon around them- very stylish and saves a lot of trees. Or consider putting gifts in reusable gift bags. Give green gifts by greening your shopping habits.

Doing these three things will help make our babies save and healthy now, and help renew the earth for our babies to live healthy when they grow up. For some ideas of excellent green baby gifts and more green gift ideas, check out my resource box below. You’ll also find more tips on going green.

Going Green Involves a Home Garden

If we are going to make the serious decision to live green to help the planet, ourselves and future generations, we must include in our living green plans, a garden. The benefits of a home garden are enormous. Not only do you save a tremendous amount on your home budget, but the health benefits far outweigh the effort involved. Obviously you can’t grow everything that you would potentially buy from the produce section of the supermarket, but the percentage is quite high of the things that you could grow. The most common things like Tomatoes, Green Beans, Carrots, Peas, Squash, Melons, Lettuce, Cabbage, Onions, etc. are things that you can grow at home. As you can see, these items are high in vitamins and minerals as you control how they are grown and what goes into the process. Not only that, you reduce the trips to the supermarket and the waste created by the packaging materials. And, the waste that is created by the garden itself, is used in the compost pile to perpetuate the garden! The compost pile is a complete article in itself and will be following this article soon.

A home garden is really a simple and fun thing that the family can do together. When my wife and I started our first garden, it was in four large flower pots and consisted of tomato plants and beans. It was great to see the plants grow and to eat the produce that we ourselves had grown. As our gardening skills and enthusiasm have grown, so has our garden. We now utilize a variation on the container gardening concept called “raised bed” gardening. We have eight 4′X10′ wooden boxes where we grow enough produce for ourselves, our neighbors and our children. The raised bed concept is really quite simple and easy to put together. I used plain 2″X12″ lumber which I painted with a common wood preservative. This prevents or prolongs the rot from developing. Then I screwed them together with deck screws. We put a fabric liner you can get at a garden center to prevent grass and weeds. You can also build your raised beds with concrete blocks laid end to end and on top of each other without the mortar. Two blocks high would be sixteen inches and a formidable garden bed.

Anyone can garden. It’s simple and easy and fun. If you live in an apartment you can still garden on your patio or balcony. Just use large flower pots or boxes. Even if all you did was grow a tomato plant. I’ll bet the next year you would grow more, then more, then more. We have a couple of chairs out in our yard near the garden. When we go outside, we might pick a hand-full of strawberries or a tomato or cucumber and sit in our chairs near the garden and just take it all in. I guess that’s as close as you can get to living green and being close to the earth other than being buried in it. It really gets you in tune with green living and helps inspire you as to other things you can do to make living green a reality in yours and your family’s life.

Till next time, happy gardening and green living.

Going Green at the Office – Tips to Help Your Business Go Green

While in the past many people were not thinking about the environment, especially at work, increased awareness of the importance of conservation and saving the environment has even made business owners begin to take a second look at practices they can change to improve the environment. If you haven’t considered how your business is affecting the environment, it may be time to consider what you can do to operate a little greener. Today it is becoming more and more popular to go green at the office and it is relatively easy to use great policies at work that can help the environment and make your business more successful as well. Not sure where to begin? Well, here are a few tips to help you out.

Tip #1 Go with Green Vendors: If you want to go green at your office, it’s going to be important to go with green vendors for your needs. Find out if vendors have green policies of their own in place already. Each vendor your use, such as your office supply company or even the bank you use should have green policies to help with the environment. Find out which businesses do use green policies and then support them and their choices by giving them your company’s business.

Tip #2 Make Donations: Another thing that you can do to keep your office environmentally friendly is to make some donations. All the pens, phones, books, computers, and other supplies that you have at the office that are no longer being used can be donated. You’ll find schools, libraries, charity stores, and nursing homes will be glad to take them off your hands. This way someone else can get some use out of them and you won’t be throwing them away.

Tip #3 Purchase and Plant Trees around Your Business: Trees are great for helping the environment by releasing oxygen into the air. Why not plant some trees around your business. Perhaps start an initiative at your office for people to earn their own tree. You may even want to set a special day aside for planting some trees. This will be great for the environment and it can be excellent for your business promotion as well. Purchasing some small saplings should not be all that expensive to do, and consider even using these trees as awards or incentives in the office instead of paper certificates.

Tip #4 Put in Electric Hand Dryers: Many businesses go with paper towels in their bathrooms, and this promotes the use of natural resources that could be saved. Instead of using all that paper, why not invest in some electric hand dryers for your bathrooms. This will save on using paper towels, and not only is it great for the environment, but it is also going to be cost effective as well, since you’ll save quite a bit on the cost of the paper towels.

Tip #5 Go with Recycled Products: There are a variety of different recycled products that you can use for your business that will help you in your pursuit of going green at the office. Some of the recycled products that you can use include recycled paper goods, recycled toner and printer cartridges, and even recycled plastics. You should recycle yourself, and also use recycled products as much as you can.

Tip #6 Purchase Personalized Coffee Mugs for Your Employees: How many Styrofoam cups do you go through a day at the office? If you have many coffee drinkers in the office lounge, more than likely you go through quite a few. Why not go ahead and purchase some personalized coffee mugs for all of your employees. This is a great gift that you can offer and they’ll be able to use their mugs over and over again instead of having to actually use Styrofoam cups, which are not great for the environment.

As you can see, there are many things that you can do that can help to improve the environment. Going green at the office is actually a lot easier and cheaper than you probably thought it would be; in fact, it can even save you money in the long run. So, if you’re ready to start taking care of the world you live in, consider using these tips at the office to make it as green as you possibly can.

Waterproofing Expert Sees Better Home Values and Green-Collar Jobs in Indoor Air Quality Upgrade

As this nation debates health care reform and frets about the economy, a crawl space sealing contractor is preaching a unique path to recovery that he believes offers three essential benefits: improved home values, safer personal environments, and endless green-collar jobs.

The health care debate too often blinds us to an alarming truth: one of the greatest dangers to health is the accumulation of poisonous gases and other pollutants in the underbelly of residential real estate. Without proper mitigation, American homeowners and their families remain vulnerable to costly and deadly chronic respiratory diseases – regardless of health care innovations.

I’m convinced that as a nation we are ignoring our health and safety. It amazes me that even in this modern age, many homeowners and realtors are not aware that fifty percent of the air we breathe in our homes originates in the basement or crawl space. Radon gas, pesticides buried in the soil and the off-gassing of oriented strand board (OSB) that is used to build our floors and foundations, all contribute to the danger.

Encapsulating a crawl space is the first step when cleaning indoor air. The next step is installing an Active Moisture & Soil Gas Management System. This innovative approach uses a wireless Sunsei solar-powered shed ventilator to reverse a home’s field of pull so that soil gases and vapor are sucked out of the living environment. The fan is a back up measure that will ensure the removal of airborne contaminants in the event that the encapsulation is compromised.

If I had it my way, each community would sponsor a meeting of contractors, government officials, real estate professionals and homeowners. Together they would debate the facts and set much higher environmental standards for housing. Fortunately, doing so would spur the economy in two significant ways. First, improving indoor air quality through proper encapsulation of crawl spaces can actually add value to a home – and a “Cadillac” upgrade is relatively inexpensive – while cutting health costs. Next, the increased demand for these services would create green-collar job opportunities. In 2008, both presidential candidates articulated the need for creating this type of work force.

It’s a win-win situation. A contractor with his head held high could provide a quality ‘green’ service that will grow his business and perhaps allow him to hire more workers. The homeowner benefits from a service that won’t break the bank and eliminates a health risk. If I can add value to my home and get it back on the sale, why wouldn’t I do it?

Homeowners would be wise to calculate the dire financial consequences of job loss due to poor health, and then compare that to the cost of indoor air quality remediation. Contractors eager to expand revenue might do the math for prospective clients. Help the homeowner understand that they either have clean air or contaminated air. There is no in-between.

Home buyers and sellers are familiar with inspections for radon gas, a natural but poisonous soil gas. But there are other dangers. For example, many new sub-divisions are built on land that was once used for agriculture, where fertilizers and pesticides were prevalent. Buried, forgotten fuel tanks might also be a source of contamination. Homeowners should research the history of the land they live on.

Homeowners must always be aware that many contractors specialize. Perhaps they are HVAC or radon experts only. These professionals tend to micromanage one element that affects indoor air quality without looking at big picture.
Once again, the lack of correct information provides an opportunity for contractors and other workers who may be seeking a career change: Become a ‘green’ indoor air quality specialist. Those who answer the call may find themselves at the forefront of a movement that wants it all – clean air and economic stability.

Eco-Parenting

Arabella Greatorex, owner of The Natural Nursery, reports on the rapidly rising demand for natural, environmentally friendly and ethically sound parenting products and highlights some of the concerns that have fuelled these demands.

Organic Food

There has been much media debate around the promotion of heavily processed foods to children, part of a long standing concern about the quality of food on offer in the UK. While some say the jury is still out on issues such as pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables, it is worth noting that only 30 additives are allowed in organic food, compared to over 300 in non-organic. Specifically, organic food bans the use of tartrazine (linked to hyperactivity in children) and GM ingredients.

The Soil Association reports that sales in organic food grew by 10% last year overall and purchases from farm shops and box schemes by a whopping 16%. This means that over 75% of households bought some organic food during 2004.

Organic baby and toddler foods now account for nearly half of total baby foods in the UK, with its market share growing rapidly, highlighting the level of concern felt by parents, and is a trend that looks set to continue.

Cloth Nappies

Modern cloth nappies bear no resemblance to the old-fashioned terry squares you probably wore as a child. They are cheaper and more hygienic to use than their disposable counterparts and parents are fast cottoning on to this. Ten years ago, only 2% of parents used cloth nappies; that figure has now grown to over 15% and is rising steadily.

Despite this growth in cloth nappy use, Bristol City Council still spends around £500,000 each year dealing with disposable nappies. Conventional disposable nappies can contain up to 200 chemicals and some estimates say they will take over 200 years to decompose.

The alternative is to use cloth nappies, which are now available in a wide range of shapes and sizes and can be just as easy to use as disposables. You can choose from so soft organic terry or a natural eco-look or funky fleece prints or even retro patterns to really make a statement. They can be flat, shaped or stuffed, depending upon your child’s personal needs and you will find other “clothies” are more than happy to help you decide which nappy is right for you.

They could help you save money as well; the Women’s Environmental Network estimate that savings will be around £500 for the first child and more for subsequent children, even taking into account the cost of home laundering.

Chemical Free Toiletries

Your skin will absorb around 60% of products applied to it and Green People estimates that the average woman will absorb about 2kg of chemicals through toiletries and cosmetics over one year, up to 75,000 different chemicals! We all know how sensitive a baby’s skin is and rates of eczema are rising fast with almost a third of babies now suffering from it.

Many people believe that the chemicals in the lotions and potions that we use are to blame. Even some so called “natural” products contain a range of chemicals that are believed to cause or exacerbate skin conditions or be carcinogenic, even if they are originally plant derived. Worryingly, a product needs to contain only 1% natural ingredients to be legally labelled “natural”.

Natural, organic and chemical free toiletries are no longer the preserve of the health food shop but are widely available on the high street or from specialist internet companies. The Soil Association estimate that there will be a 20% increase in the number of licensed organic manufacturers this year, reflecting the huge surge in demand, especially amongst families with young children.

Fair trade

When you are buying clothes or toys for your baby, international trade may seem like a remote issue but by choosing carefully, you could make all the difference to someone else’s life. Farmers in the developing world are ill-equipped to cope with dramatic changes in commodity prices, which are caused by factors outside the control of the individuals most concerned.

Parents are being offered an increasing range of fairly or ethically traded products, including clothes, shoes, toys, toiletries and nappies. Sales of “Fairtrade” marked goods are now well over £100m per year in the UK alone, up 46% on last year and we eat a third of a million fair trade bananas every DAY!

The growth in organic cotton

Most people assume that as cotton is a natural product, it is produced naturally, unfortunately, this is not the case. Around 150 grams of hazardous chemical pesticides will be used to grow enough cotton to make one t-shirt. The cotton farming industry accounts for about 1/4 of the world’s insecticide use as well as huge amounts of fertilisers that can end up in the water system and food chain.

The World Health Organisation estimates that 20,000 people die every year in developing countries as a result of poisoning from pesticides used on non-organic cotton. Worryingly, much of the world’s cotton production comes from genetically modified crops: over 2/3rds of China’s cotton crop is GM.

Luckily, more and more organic textiles are now available and there has been an 80% increase in the worldwide production of organic cotton in the last 2 years, with sales in the UK alone now worth over £20m from almost zero a couple of years ago. You can now buy organic clothes, bedding, towels, sheepskins and nappies from a range of suppliers – even good old Marks and Spencer sell a range of organic cotton yoga clothes.

Katharine Hamnett, fashion designer, says: “This is part of a rapidly growing trend reflecting increasing consumer awareness and concern over global issues to do with the impact of pesticides, herbicides, dioxins and toxic chemicals used in textiles, on the environment and human heath. The good news is that this shows people are actually looking for positive alternatives.”

And for the daddies

The Ecologist Magazine recently studied the contents of a can of shaving gel and found it to contain “several skin irritants, four potential carcinogens, three central nervous system poisons and two reproductive toxins” – and all this before breakfast!

Arabella Greatorex is the owner of http://www.naturalnursery.co.uk, an online store selling organic and fairly traded products for families including organic clothing and nappies, fairly traded toys and natural toiletries.

Are There Hidden Health Hazards In Your Baby’s Nursery?

Would you expose your newborn baby to formaldehyde, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and pesticides? Of course not! Even if you were told, it shouldn’t affect your baby’s health, you wouldn’t want to take that chance. Yet one of the first things we do as expectant parents is to prepare a nursery for our baby. We paint, buy a crib, mattress, and bedding and perhaps even install new carpeting in the room that our baby will spend the majority of their first year.

Did you know that these products contain formaldehyde, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, pesticide residues and other chemicals that could affect your baby’s health and development?

It’s bad enough that we expose ourselves to these chemicals but it is even worse for our children. Babies are more susceptible to the effects of toxins than adults for several reasons. The most obvious reason is that babies are much smaller and therefore have a lower tolerance to toxins. Babies are also developing very rapidly and any chemical that interferes with the growth and development process is going to have a greater effect on them as compared to an adult. Babies also take in more air than adults in relation to their body size which means they are breathing in more toxins than an adult. Finally, many toxic gasses commonly found in the home are heavier than air and settle near the floor where children play.
There are many measures we can take as parents to make our home a more natural, safer place to raise healthy children. Listed below are the sources of many common household toxins and what you can do to eliminate or reduce the risk of exposure for your baby and yourself.

Flame Retardants

Flame retardants are probably one of the first toxins your baby will encounter in the home. Even though it may seem like you never get any sleep with a newborn in the house, babies actually do a lot of sleeping–about 60% of their first year! That is a lot of time to spend in close contact with a mattress treated with flame retardants called PBDEs. Several animal studies have found that PBDEs build up in the body over time and exposure during critical growth periods may cause irreversible reproductive and nervous system damage(1). PBDEs are chemically similar to PCBs which were banned in 1976 after they were found to cause cancer and affect the immune, reproductive, nervous and endocrine system in animals(2). PBDEs are already banned in Europe but unfortunately they are still widely used in the US. An organic crib mattress is essential for a healthy nursery. Consider purchasing a mattress made with organic cotton or latex and wool. The wool not only acts to regulate temperature, but is also naturally fire retardant. An organic cotton and wool crib mattress will meet the same government standards for flammability as a chemically treated mattress but is a much more natural option and avoids any potential risks of PBDEs.

Pesticides

Most crib bedding is made with cotton, the second most heavily pesticide treated crop in the world. Of the top nine pesticides used in cotton farming, five have been shown to cause cancer and are rated among the most dangerous by the Environmental Protection Agency. Even more chemicals are added during the process to convert the raw cotton into cloth. Because your baby will spend so much time sleeping, it makes sense that their crib bedding be free from any pesticide residue or chemical contaminants. When shopping for crib bedding, opt for those made with organic cotton, grown without the use of pesticides. Children also love to put their toys in their mouth so consider purchasing stuffed animals made from organic cotton, especially when babies are teething.

Another source of pesticide exposure is from treating our homes and yards. Research indicates that children exposed to higher levels of pesticides had seven times the risk of developing childhood Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma(3). As an alternative to conventional pesticides, consider using cornmeal in the yard to prevent weed seeds from germinating (available in many garden shops and online). There are several good books written on the subject of natural gardening that provide natural solutions to all kinds of lawn and garden problems. My personal favorites are books by Jerry Baker who has literally thousands of tips and tricks. Inside the home, pesticides made from orange peel are safe, natural and very effective at killing many common pests.

Paint

Most paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOC) that off gas into the air long after the paint has dried. That wet paint smell is actually due to the VOCs in the paint evaporating into the air. Healthier paint alternatives would be a natural paint, zero VOC paint or a low VOC paint. Natural paints are the healthiest choice. They are made form natural plant based compounds and have almost no smell. Zero VOC paints are also a safe choice, are very easy to work with, have very little or no odor and are widely available and affordable. By law, paint with 5 grams per liter VOC or less may be called a zero VOC paint. Tinting the paint may add a small amount of VOC but usually not exceeding 10 grams per liter VOC which is still very low. To minimize the amount of VOCs added by tint, choose a pastel or light color for your baby’s nursery. These colors are also very soothing and will help you baby to relax and fall asleep faster. The VOC content for low VOC paint varies and is usually written on the label. These paints will often have an odor at least until dry. Regardless of what type of paint you are using, if you are pregnant, it is best to let someone else do the painting if possible or at least choose safe paint and make sure there is adequate ventilation.

Lead is another consideration when discussing paint toxins. If your home was built before 1978, it may have been painted with a lead based paint. Because lead can cause developmental problems in children, any chipped paint where it could be ingested poses a health risk. Pregnant women should also be careful to avoid areas where anything that may contain lead based paint is being sanded or refinished.

Household Cleaners and Baby Bath Items

Most household cleaners are toxic chemicals. Consider using cleaners that are made from plant and vegetable based ingredients and essential oils for fragrance. Rather than using a synthetic cleaner on tile or linoleum flooring where a child will crawl and play, use a stream cleaner which will disinfect without the use of chemicals.

While there are many bath soaps and shampoos on the market made especially for baby, often these are just milder versions of the adult formula. Read the labels and ask yourself if you would want those ingredients (Yes…even the ones you can’t pronounce) inside your baby’s body. The skin acts as a barrier for some chemicals however many are absorbed through the skin, a process which is aided by the warmth and moisture while bathing. Natural soaps, lotions and oils are always the best choice for your baby.

Carpeting

Traditional carpeting and the adhesives sometimes used in its installation can be a toxic nightmare. Carpeting contains too many VOCs to name them all but include neurotoxins like toluene and xylene and carcinogens such as benzene and formaldehyde which may off gas into the air for years. Older carpet contains years of accumulated dust and dirt that may contribute to the development of asthma. Pesticides tracked indoors from shoes also build up in carpeting over time. There are many other flooring options besides carpeting that are now coming into mainstream design. Cork flooring is beautiful, soft and environmentally friendly. Bamboo is another beautiful environmentally friendly option. Just make sure that the manufacturer and the installer do not use any glues containing formaldehyde. Natural fiber area rugs are another option which can be laid on cork, bamboo or tile floors to define a space or to give your baby a soft spot to land while learning to walk. Some people just love the look and warmth of wall to wall carpeting and for those there is low VOC carpeting made from recycled plastic which is even more durable an stain resistant than traditional carpeting.

Indoor Air Pollution

The toxins from the sources above and more fill the air in our homes. We hear reports about smog and air pollution but according to the EPA, indoor air pollution may be 3-5 times worse than the air we breathe outdoors. Chemicals released into the air build up and can not escape especially in newer homes which are constructed to be airtight and more energy efficient. When the weather cooperates we can open the windows to air out the house but when it is cold or when the air conditioner is running there is little air exchange between indoors and out. In families with toddlers, leaving the windows open may pose a safety hazard. So what can we do? One of the least expenses things we can do is to bring some plants into our home which are able to remove chemicals from the air, acting as a purifier. Not all plants are created equal in this respect. NASA has tested and ranked twelve species of plants to determine the best at removing trichloroethylene, benzene and formaldehyde from the air. Here is what they found:

  • Gerbera daisy, Dracaena Marginata, Peace lily (Spathiphyllum), Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’ and Bamboo palm were the five most effective plants in eliminating trichloroethylene.
  • Gerbera Daisy, pot Mum, Peace lily, Bamboo palm, Dracaena Warneckei, English ivy and Mother-in-law’s tongue are the best houseplants for removing benzene.
  • Bamboo palm, Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’, Mother-in-law’s tongue, Dracaena Marginata, Peace lily, green Spider plant, and golden pothos are the top plants for removing formaldehyde.

Just remember to give your Gerbera daisy a lot of sun! Based on this study, an 1800 square foot home would need between 15-20 plants to clean the air. I love plants and my home is full of them. I think they create a warm and inviting atmosphere but not everyone wants to feel like they are living in a jungle. In addition, some people have allergies which prohibit them from filling their home with plants. For those people and as an extra layer of protection, consider an air purifier, especially if any renovation was done to prepare your baby’s nursery.

There are several different types of air purifiers available. The best will have HEPA or HEGA filtration and will also remove airborne gasses. Beware of air purifiers that contain ionizers as they may release ozone into the air which is harmful to lung tissue, especially for those with asthma. Purifiers are available in a wide range of prices but also consider how much it will cost to operate in terms of electricity and replacement filters. Consider how noisy a unit is while running. If you can’t leave it run, an air purifier will not serve its purpose.

Scary Statistics

While it is impossible to point a finger at one particular chemical, over the last few decades, cancer and asthma rates have increased, learning disabilities have increased 191% between 1977 and 1994, autism rates have skyrocketed 556% over the last ten years nationwide(4) and the rate of premature births is up 29% since 1981(5). One thing we do know is that as a nation, our children are getting sicker.

Children learn values through their parent’s actions. By making healthy decisions for your baby now, you are teaching them to make healthy decisions for themselves later in life. As parents, we want only the best for our children. Why take chances with your baby’s health by purchasing products that contain harmful chemicals when there are healthy alternatives available?

Cynthia Smith began her mission to promote healthy home environments during the adoption of her first child. Cynthia owns and operates Mother Earth Nursery Designs, LLC to provide organic and healthy products for moms, babies and babys nursery. Coal Powered Plants Defacing The Earth.

Why coal powered plants?

Most common power plants in the US are powered by coals. The reason coals are used is because it is cheap and the supply are more stable compared to natural gas or oil. Water are boiled by burning of coals and the steam produced will drive a steam turbine which generates electricity. This method is also one of the most polluting method to generate electricity.

How do they destroy?

Coals are both mined on the surface and deep in the earth. In surface mining, the surrounding area are first cleared of all flora and fauna. Then after that, soil will be extracted in large quantities where it will be processed to separated the coals buried inside. Often after the coals are finish extracted from that area, huge craters several kilometers wide barren of all life. Mountains are leveled down leaving no trace of it ever stood higher than a hill. Acidic water may flow out from abandoned mines and stain the water system in that area.

In underground mining, tunnels are dug deep inside the earth and often spread out for miles. After coals are finished, miners pack up and leaving behind the tunnels. These tunnels may one day become unstable and collapsed. Mining underground also causes hazardous gasses to be released and build up inside the tunnels, causing mishaps.

Are there alternatives available?

A large scale power production are limited in choices as it depends on the geometry and the resources available in the region. So replacing coal powered plants are still far from becoming a reality. Companies began to take steps to ensure the CO2 emission from burning these coals are reduced. Other than coal, substitute substance is added in without sacrificing efficiency. The waste from burning are also processed to they can be used in other industry.

Home users like us can help by reducing the power we use daily. Turn off unnecessary electric appliances and minimize their usage. We can also try to substitute our source electricity by using a solar panel system or wind turbine. The less we need to depend on these coal powered plants, the less in demand coal will be, lowering the amount mined thus saving nature from being destroyed.

Five Ideas How To Save Energy In Your Home

Energy conservation is accepted by all of us as a necessity to save our planet from metamorphosing into an inhospitable residence. However, not very many take it seriously enough to do something about it beyond paying lip service. And because the ‘little acts that go a long way’ have been emphasized, a good part of those who do something are contented with these ‘little things’. These things are not bad, and they can contribute something significant in the cumulative. But often the small ‘good’ things are overwhelmed by the ‘bad’ ones by sheer magnitude. Therefore if we are really intent on doing something for the environment by saving energy, here are five proven ways to do so.

1. Build a solar room. A solar room is a glass-enclosed room on the south side of the house. A series of openings are built at about ground level that can be opened to admit air or closed, near the top to release warm air and baffles to vent the air inside the house itself. A movable screen ceiling is also incorporated into the design to close out the sunshine or opened to admit it.

At daytime during the cold months, the screen is retracted to allow the sunshine to heat the solar room. When sufficient is generated, the house vents are opened to let the warm air into the house and thus reduce the work load of the radiator or furnace. The ground vents are then opened to admit new air for another cycle. The reverse is done when the weather is warm.

2. Use sun-generated electricity. Install solar panels and you can generate electricity to at least reduce your electricity consumption from the utility provider. Although the initial investment may appear stiff, the accumulated savings in the medium to long term will recover the cost many times over.

3. Draft-proof your house. Drafty openings let out warm air during the cold months, making your radiator or furnace overwork and raise your electrical consumption. There are materials for these uses recommended by engineers and building professionals to seal off the spaces between window or door jams and the wall, the siding and the foundation concrete, the airconditioner opening and wall.

4. Use insulation in your house. Insulating the house structure will limit heat loss from the house interior or entry of coldness from the outside during cold months. You might consider cavity wall insulation, and insulating your roof. As heat builds up it rises so that much escapes through the roof.

5. Replace your lighting system with energy efficient lamps. Common and a very practical move to lessen electrical energy consumption. There are many kinds that use relatively less electricity in varying percentages, so you can find something that fits your budget. Just remember that the savings become better in the long run.

The preceding are just a few of the many ways to save energy. Find those that you can implement in your home and see how much you can save. Plus, see if you qualify for federal or state government incentives for those who employ energy conservation measures in their homes. It can add some more to your savings.

Simple Steps To Green Your House

The easiest way to go green is always the simplest way; reduce, reuse and recycle. All of us should know how to do them. Collect paper, plastic or tin and dump them at the recycle site. Reuse some of the old jars to store your cooking spices and reduce the amount of paper used while doing your home work. There is a lot more steps that can be done to go green and here is a few that might not come cross your mind.

I will start off first in the kitchen. Buy your kitchen needs in bulk. If you know you will be using them a lot, then getting them in bulk will use less packaging than buying them in smaller amounts. Do not rely on dishwashers to wash your plates. You cannot fully control the amount of water used and most water might be wasted. Wash the plates with your hands instead. Use natural detergent to wash your plates. You do not have to purchase natural detergent as you can make them yourself.

Then moving on to your living room. Use the sun to help warm up your living room. Put up window blinds around so you can adjust the amount of sunlight and heat entering your room. Use a sweater indoors if it is too cold. You save some energy by not using your heater/air-conditioner. Replace your light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Now to your work area. When printing, be sure to set your printer to print on both sides of the paper. Opt to use a laptop rather than a desktop as your working computer. A laptop can do most computing jobs like a desktop computer but it uses less power. Consider using rechargeable batteries for your gadgets. Drink green coffee which are coffee beans that is grown without doing a lot of harm to nature. Do not forget to use reusable coffee filters too.

Information To Help You Choose The Ideal Gardening Forum For Your Requirements

Lots of gardening enthusiasts share views and ideas on online community forums. You can find nearly every gardening forum you can imagine: from urban and normal gardening to natural gardening, plants, fertilizers, green house gardening and so much more. The ideas aren’t necessarily amateurish as there are numerous experts who log in discussion boards and talk about their practical experience and understanding. You can even access large databases of data with 1000s of plant species, but this generally depends on the community to which you belong.

Why not use a gardening community forum to find guidance to a pressing question? Engagement in talks is freely consented and if you have some good topic you wish to begin, you are able to start it on the gardening forum where you are a fellow member. If you’re a new comer to the community, start off by introducing yourself. It’s great to simply say hello and you’ll see that individuals will greet you warmly.

Any kind of brand new member of a gardening community forum will need to take a few moments and read the tips and suggestions for the usage of the forum. Sometimes you can find guidelines to be satisfied to be able to submit comments. Yet, they are simply formalities that you may get through easily and then go to the information that interests you. The net allows for a larger admittance to information, and great projects can come from the worldwide collaborations of those that work closest to land and plants.

When you join a gardening community forum, pick up the subject that most interests you. Look at the other people’s comments and see the course of the dialogue. You can only read and learn a couple of things from the old discussions or join in and provide an individual solution or response associated with the gardening topic in question. It’s vitally important to mention the point that community forums have moderators and that all of the discussions are monitored. This will not reduce the freedom of speech but instead enables the activity of the gardening discussion board to carry on without insolence and controversies.

Join a foreign gardening discussion board if you speak another language besides English, and it is possible to thus open new horizons on gardening. The Online doesn’t question nationality. A lot of people who use a gardening forum will refer to practical applications, but talking about plants and cultivation, specificity from a location diverse than yours may not be that useful. Should you live in the tropics and you enter a conversation about temperate climate gardening, you may not take any involvement in the subject.

How To Grow Vegetables From Seed

Vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant, need a long, warm growing season to produce a harvest.

If you plan to grow your own seedlings, start such crops indoors in late winter in order to have plants ready to set out in the garden when the weather has warmed up. If you want to plant tomato seedlings in May, for instance, you’ll need to start those seeds by early March.

Veggie 101: How to start your garden
You can use a variety of containers, including flats or trays (with or without dividers), small individual pots, and cell-packs. If you’re reusing old containers, scrub them out, and soak them for half an
hour in a solution of one part household bleach to nine parts hot water to destroy any disease organisms.

Seeds to seedlings
Fill 4-inch pots to just below the rim with a light, porous seed-starting or potting mix Moisten the mix, and let it drain.

Scatter seeds thinly over the surface. Check the seed packet for the recommended planting depth, and cover the seeds with the proper amount of mix. (As a rule of thumb, cover seeds to a depth equal to twice their diameter.) Label each container with the plant’s name and the date. Moisten the soil lightly.

If you are starting heat-loving plants (tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, okra, peppers, squashes, or melons), set the containers on a water heater or use a heating mat to keep the soil between 75°F/24°C and 90°F/32°C. (Most cool-season vegetables will germinate at room temperature.)

When the seeds germinate, move the pots into an area with bright light and temperatures between 60°F/16°C and 75°F/24°C.

When the seedlings develop their second set of true leaves, it’s time to transplant them to individual pots, such as 3- or 4-inch plastic pots. Fill the new containers with potting mix, moisten the mix, and let it drain.

To remove the seedlings from their original pots, squeeze each pot’s sides, and turn it upside down, keeping one hand around the soil ball. With both hands, carefully pull the soil ball apart, and set it down on a flat surface.

Separate the fragile rootballs of the seedlings from one another with a toothpick or skewer, or tease them apart with your fingers.

Poke a hole in the new container’s potting mix. Carefully lift each seedling and its rootball, keeping your fingers under it for support. Place the seedling in its new container, and firm the mix around it. Water immediately, and then set the pots in bright light.

Seedlings of edible crops need bright light to develop properly; when grown in conditions that are too dark, the seedlings are spindly and weak. If you don’t have a suitable place for your seedlings, try growing them under fluorescent lights. As soon as the seeds sprout, give them 12 to 14 hours of light each day, setting the light fixture 6 to 8 inches above the tops of the plants.

Seeds of heat-loving summer crops need warm soil to germinate quickly and strongly. Thin waterproof heating mats placed under the containers keep the soil 15 to 20°F/8 to 11°C above room temperature.

Nurseries and mail-order catalogs offer both fluorescent light kits and heating mats.

Avoid “damping off” trouble

If your seedlings suddenly collapse and die, one of the fungal diseases called “damping off” or “seed and seedling rot” may be to blame. In one type of damping off, the seedling’s stem collapses at or near the soil surface; in another type, the seedling rots before it emerges from the soil, or the seed decays before it even sprouts.

To prevent these problems, use pasteurized potting mix and new or thoroughly washed and disinfected containers.

Take care not to overwater seedlings; be sure to provide good air circulation and ventilation, so tops of seedlings stay dry and standing moisture is kept to a minimum. Thinning seedlings to eliminate crowding is also helpful.

Non-Toxic Living Attitude : Toxins Vs. Toxicants

Non-toxic living is a certain mental disposition with regard to poisonous substances. Toxic substances are known as toxins and toxicants. In order to diminish harmful effect of toxins and toxicants, it is imperative that we identify what they are first.

By definition, a toxin is a poisonous substance produced by living cell or organisms…toxins can be small molecules, peptides, or proteins that are capable of causing disease…Science often doesn’t give us a straight answer what is healthy and what is not. According to Stedman’s Medical Dictionary 24th Ed., “Toxins are relatively complex antigenic molecules, and the chemical compositions are usually not precisely known“.

For a toxic substance not produced by living organisms, the more appropriate term is toxicant. A toxicant is a chemical compound that has a harmful effect on organisms. Toxicants are typically introduced into the environment by human activity.

Both toxins and toxicants can produce an adverse response in a biological system, seriously injuring structure or function, or resulting in death. Very important survival aspect of humanity is decreasing the potential of causing acute or chronic adverse effects in animals, plants, or people. We have to develop our non-toxic living attitude which expands our consciousness wider. Non-toxic living attitude is based on natural tendency of human mind to choose vitality instead of decay. We can increase its potential and regulate our daily activities by conscious preference, not only by survival instincts.

The fashion trends of green living and organic products are not always relevant to non-toxic living attitude. Some news and discoveries sound not attractive at all. Organic apples contain acids which dissolve teeth enamel twice faster, organic vegetables loose all essential vitamins during cooking process, row eating cause stomach disease, wearing wool clothing often provokes allergic reaction and skin irritation, disgusting sprays produce better cosmetic effects, organic compost contains heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,pharmaceuticals,steroids,flame-retardants,bacteria,fungi,parasites and viruses.

We can’t completely remove toxins and toxicants from our lives as a source of a problem, but we can eliminate and eventually eradicate the problem itself by questioning our beliefs and values and make right choices for ourselves and our families and pets.

Know The Costs Of A Tree Removal

When considering having a tree removed from your property there are a multitude of variables that need to be accounted for. Depending on the particular circumstances of the tree such as the type of tree, the size of the tree, and where the tree is located in relation to roads and property the price to get a tree removed can range from less than two hundred dollars to well over fourteen hundred.

Generally when classifying a tree for removal there are four different categories that the trees can fit in. There are the small trees which go up to thirty feet all. These small trees generally can be removed for $120 to $450 each. Then there are medium sized trees which range from thirty to sixty feet tall. The average price to remove one of these trees is between $175 to $1000 each. Any tree that is between sixty and eighty feet is classified as a large tree and will run you between $400 and $1100 a piece to be removed. Very large trees or trees that are eighty to one hundred feet tall will cost between $950 and $1400 each to be removed. These estimates can be pretty accurate for the most part but size is not the only factor that has to be considered when having a tree removed.

The trees location plays a large part in the price of the estimate given to remove the tree. If the tree surrounded by expensive property the risk involved will increase the cost of the removal. It is important to know exactly what you want done with the undesired tree. Usually the very small debris left over from a tree being cut down will be removed from the property by the tree crew free of charge. The larger pieces however will often times not be included in the estimate. Many companies charge to chip up the larger pieces and to remove the chips if that is desired. Stump removal will also almost always be an extra charge. To have a stump ground down will take a separate piece of equipment and can add another 300 to 500 dollars on to the price of the removal. It is essential to do all the research necessary before having a tree removed.

Downloadable Storage Shed Plans

If you are looking to free up some space in the house and the garage is already so crammed with odds and ends, gardening equipment and other stuff that’s in the way but you don’t want to actually throw it out then a storage shed could be the ideal solution.

With downloadable storage shed plans readily available from the internet it is worthwhile looking into building your own and it’s not as hard as you may think; it’s a great way of saving money and a satisfying project to carry out.

Here are some tips to help with the project:

First do a search online for downloadable storage shed plans, don’t bother with the single sets of plans, you can get hold of whole sets of shed plans that also include other projects such as garden furniture and so on. These plans cost a fraction of the single sets with plans working out at just a few cents each.

Next decide where you are going to put your new shed, keep in mind the position of doors and windows, also make sure that it will look good in relation to your house and not block the wife’s favorite sun bathing spot!

Now roughly work out the floor space covered by the storage shed and then going back to your plans use this information to choose a size and design that best suits your needs.

Having decided on the type and design it’s time to check with your building inspector to make sure that your new construction does not contravene any building codes and you may want to consult with the local tenants association if you have one.

If all of the above goes to plan, no pun intended, then you can order your materials from your local supplier, all the wood sizes’ fixtures and fittings will be listed on you blueprints. Some suppliers will cut your timbers to length at no extra cost. Again from your plans you should be able to work out costs but don’t forget to account for things like paint and brushes etc.

You will need to prepare a solid foundation for your shed; this could be made up of concrete, gravel, blocks or treated timbers, a good base will add years to the life of your shed and ensure the smooth operation of doors and windows.

Your downloadable storage shed plans will save you time and money and give you detailed step by step instructions on how to build your new shed. You are now ready to build your storage shed in the stages set out in your plans.

Clothing Makers Expand Recycling Efforts

Most people wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a shower curtain in public. Few would cover themselves in spent coffee grounds, or wrap their bodies in old fishing nets — at least knowingly.

But there’s a growing trend among clothing manufacturers who are turning all kinds of trash into fashion these days.

Dated audiotapes. Old signs and office chairs. They’re all being recycled into clothes that are sold by well-known retailers.

“Our evolution toward using trash as our supply chain came through our desire to reduce the impact our clothing has on the planet,” said Jen Rapp, director of communications and public relations for Patagonia, the Ventura-based manufacturer that is largely credited with birthing, then mainstreaming, the trash-to-fashion trend.

In 1993, Patagonia began recycling old plastic water and soda bottles, and then combining them with a small amount of virgin polyester to make polar fleece jackets. More recently it’s expanded the concept with old shower curtains, recycled garments, cutting-room floor scraps and polyester signs that are broken down to their molecular level, spun into threads, woven into textiles and cut into long underwear, technical gear such as rain jackets and other items that give no hint of their junky past.

Recycling plastics into clothes “is nothing new and it’s a good idea,” says Gregory Unruh, director of the Lincoln Center for Ethics in Global Management at the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix and author of the book “Earth, Inc.” “The trick is that the material recovery costs are cost effective, and usually they are. It makes a lot of sense, and a lot of companies are trying to move in that direction.”

Unruh cited Patagonia, Capri Sun and Coca-Cola, the latter of which has long recycled its soda pop empties into its own branded clothing line. H&M, Sears’ suit maker EcoGir and the handbags line Matt & Nat also use recycled plastic bottle textiles in their designs. According to Unruh, recycling waste uses less energy and creates fewer greenhouse gas emissions than sourcing virgin materials.

“There’s new technology to make apparel out of recycled products other than plastic bottles,” said Harris Liu, president of Southern California apparel broker Caerus & Muse.

Liu is hoping his Asian textile manufacturer, which fuses spent coffee grounds with yarns made from recycled plastic and spins them into athletic gear that controls odor and blocks UV rays, will expand its contract with Starbucks in Taiwan to coffee and fast food chains in the U.S.

Eco-Panda, of Whittier, is turning old fishing nets into bikinis that are now sold at Delia’s. Sanuk, the Cardiff by the Sea-based maker of casual footwear, including popular closed-toe sandals, has expanded its recycling efforts (using textiles made from recycled water bottles) to incorporate old tires and yoga mats, both of which are used for soles. The old tires are sourced within 100 miles of where the shoes are made in China.

“Instead of ending up in landfills,” said Sanuk founder Jeff Kelley, “they end up on the bottoms of people’s feet.”

Gardening Clubs – Find The Guidance You Desire For Your Gardening Problems

Membership in a gardening club is often extremely helpful for numerous reasons. The advantages do not result solely from the regular discussions with other members but from the access to all sorts of bargains and discount rates with many stores. First you would need to fill in a few forms so that you can become a member of a gardening club. There are websites and stores that operate in support of a specific gardening membership and all the purchases qualify for discounts if you are a member.

Where can you join a gardening club? Many such hobbyist organizations tend to be assembled by enthusiasts who work with others to put together all sorts of gardening projects and activities. Many individuals favor the online version of the gardening club, while other people will just go local. A few clubs are amateurish while others are expert.

Then, you can appreciate other benefits by your membership to a gardening club, besides special deals and bargains. Information exchange represents the heart and soul of these events. You may not get the answer to some questions you may have in some magazine or books, but more knowledgeable gardeners may help you with the problem. The chance to get advice with other enthusiasts is an opportunity you should make the most of.

The service of online forums follows the model of a gardening golf club. Folks start topics and they trade thoughts on them. You can further talk to the other members of the membership via email, on the telephone or you can establish regular gatherings. For 1000s of gardeners that don’t have open communities within their neighborhood, the internet provides an excellent chance to share information. There isn’t such a big change in the online enrollment process when compared with regular clubs.

Ensure that you check the conditions and terms of the gardening club and learn the rights and responsibilities you have as a new member. Oftentimes, members pay fees to help support the upkeep and the administrative tasks of their gardening club, and this is a matter which you should be informed. Discover what is required from you before you sign up. Make the gardening club experience a genuinely nice one!

Global Warming – How Much Do You Know About It?

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth’s near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation (From Wikipedia). Then, how does global warming become one of the most serious environment issues, and what should we do to deal with this problem?

The recent attention to the topic of global warming is due to the fact that human actions have caused global warming on a scale and with a rapidity unseen before.

Global average air temperature near the Earth’s surface has increased by 0.56-0.92 C over the last century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concludes that this observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in greenhouse gas concentrations due to such activities like burning coal and fossil fuels, cutting down forests, and overgrazing the land. These activities have increased the greenhouse effect, which in turn, has warmed the temperatures near the Earth’s surface and lower atmosphere.

4461352277_d28d55b2d4.jpg

Global warming has continued to be a major international policy issue since 1979, as the Rio Summit in 1992 proposed actions to constrain the emissions and the Kyoto Summit in December 1997 established binding agreements that would commit nation states to the constraints.

Europe, Japan, and the United States have agreed in principle to adopt the “Berlin Mandate” that requires them to cut their CO2 emissions to 15% below their 1990 levels by 2010. The US is not totally convinced this is the right approach, however, as the US Department of Energy has conducted a study that suggests the “Berlin Mandate” will not reduce world-wide emissions of CO2.

In fact, the study suggests that the “Berlin Mandate” could raise CO2 emissions because many energy intensive industries would be forced to leave the US, Europe, and Japan where the constraints are enforced to countries that have either not adopted the mandate or that don’t strictly enforce them, and because those countries likely would have less energy efficient industries, that would likely raise the level of CO2 emissions.

Now, as you see, human behaviours have done a great harm to the earth. If we still hope to live on this planet, if we are concerned about the future of our offspring, we should strive on to make up for the problems we have caused, such as global warming.

Sendoutcards: Is This Your Golden Opportunity?

Many folks want to send cards as soon as they remember to colleagues, family, and friends. SendOutCards gives them that chance. I was hooked right away, because this is the kind of company that will always have customers. There’s just a vast array of personal and national and religious holidays that require a card to be sent, so I knew that it was a great idea to build a company around the idea.

However, just because so many people everywhere do send cards, there was still some wariness about whether this was a real chance for wealth. Could distributors connected with SendOutCards really make big profits compared with all the time, money, and energy they’d put in? Is it possible to work from home and make a nice income, and would this company really pay when push came to shove?

The internet site for SendOutCards lists five methods for making a profit with this company. We can review and see if they’re really attainable to most distributors or if they’re just a pie-in-the-sky ideal that no one can reach. The number one method is called “Retail Profits From Preferred Customers.” You can get these paid to you every month, given several different price points.

One of these is called an “Annual Account”, and those just starting out will probably want to buy one of these. They’ll get an Annual Account Card and this can be used to buy points right from their distributor. The distributor really should encourage potential customers to buy this Annual Account. The payout is $25 and you earn 50 cents or so for every point you buy.

Just to summarize the point system: for a greeting card you’d get two points, and for a postcard or upload of an image you’d get one point. When you’re deciding to come on board, you’ll notice that these aren’t big chunks of change; but once you’re in the system and have the right people with you, the end of the month can yield some nice profits.

The second point is that distributors can earn extra awards for coaching new members. These can be collected every week. Customers can choose from varied available packages, and the distributor will decide which commissions come with each. For $298 the “Wholesale Package Plus!” has a lot to offer, such as a distributor coaching session. Besides that, you can pay wholesale for the product. The distributor him or herself makes $120 from selling this package to a new member.

There’s also an “Entrepreneur Plus Package!” for $398. The distributor earns $120 for selling this one, too, but also gets $15 – $50 for the coaching sessions they give. This really yields nice money for those who’ve recruited lots of good folks. Those on the downline who receive the package and the coaching also get additional benefits.

It’s necessary to realize when you’re considering the SendOutCards opportunity that as a distributor you’ll want to develop a big group of customers so you can sell in volume. Every card doesn’t yield a lot of profit, but with a domino effect the number of sales can certainly give you big financial results by the end of the month.

It is for this reason that you are recommended to use eco friendly cleaning solutions instead of traditional ones that contain harmful chemicals.

A numbers of eco friendly solutions are available in the market these days; however, it is important to carefully analyze their constituents in order to be sure of their eco friendly nature. A few things that you should consider while selecting an eco friendly cleaning solution include their pH levels, level of solvents and their biodegradable nature. Cleaning solutions that have pH levels of either more than 7 or less than 7 are considered to be highly corrosive; therefore, you should look out for a cleaning solution that has a neutral pH level. Solvents such as PGEs (Propylene Glycol Ethers) and EGEs (Ethylene glycol ethers) are also considered to be harmful and should be avoided in a cleaning solution. Finally, it is important to consider the biodegradable nature of your cleaning solution to ensure that it does not harm the environment.
