Indoor Air Pollution – Causes, Effects and Controls

Indoor air pollution refers to the presence of gaseous and particulate contaminants in the indoor air environment. Contamination of indoor air is particularly hazardous because people spend about 65 to 95 percent of their lives indoors and exposure to some of the contaminants may cause serious health problems. However, for taking effective control measures, it is necessary to identify the sources of air pollutants.

Sources of Indoor Air Pollution

Both natural and man-made sources can deteriorate indoor air quality. Natural sources include soils and water that release radon decay products, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fungi. In addition, some animal pets also release certain allergens affecting sensitive individuals. Other than natural sources, many human actions cause emissions of dangerous air pollutants into the indoor environment.

Human-produced air contaminants originate from various types of appliances, combustion sources such as vehicle engines, wood burning and unvented space heating using gas and kerosene. Building materials are also a significant source of particulates in air. Some pollutants are generated by individual behavior, such as tobacco smoking and through use of consumer products.

Effects of Indoor Air pollution

Effects of poor indoor air quality upon humans and animals are dependent upon exposure and the concentration of pollutants. Effects experienced by humans include respiratory illness, decreased lung function and other physiological changes. Particulate matter and formaldehyde cause irritation of eyes and produce changes in pulmonary function. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, nitrates and methylene chlorides affect heart and brain by causing changes in carboxy hemoglobin.

Lead has been identified to have neurological effects, especially in infants and children. Benzene has been shown to produce a form of leukemia while both radon and asbestos have been proven to cause lung cancer in humans. Studies of effects on animals have shown results similar to those found in humans.

Indoor air contamination can also have corrosive effects on materials. Outdoor pollutants can infiltrate and interact with indoor pollutants to generate new substances that are detrimental to materials; an example is outdoor ozone interacting with indoor volatile organic compounds to produce corrosive compounds affecting electronic equipment. Extensive damage to rubber, paint and dyes, leather and textiles, and ceramics has been demonstrated by indoor air pollutants.

Indoor Air Pollution Control

The first and foremost control measure on indoor air contamination is source removal including water, plants, pets, and certain building materials. Another effective consideration is reduction in source emissions through manufacturing processes, changes in building materials, prevention of water leakage, and source usage recommendations. Similarly, reduction of exposure to humans can be achieved using standard direct methods such as filtration and cleaning, as well as good building and source design.

Government agencies can monitor product manufacturing, promote ventilation in workplaces, use public health education to help people minimize risks and encourage safe indoor air, and enforce regulations (such as banning tobacco smoking in workplaces and public buildings). Finally, individuals can limit their exposures, especially in residences, by several measures, including avoidance of sources that degrade the quality of indoor air.

Clean Indoor Air

The quality of indoor air is badly affected by addition of contaminants from both natural and human-caused sources. Many of these contaminants such as VOCs are harmful for human health and may cause terrible ailments. Some of the pollutants in indoor air are detrimental to objects made of rubber, ceramics and metals and result in material losses. The indoor air pollution can be controlled by removing sources, reducing emissions and minimizing exposures to humans and materials. Both Government regulations and public education are vital for effective results.

Texas Water Rights Are Muddy At Best

Water will become our most valuable asset—probably the most precious commodity we’ll have available in the next 50 years.” I heard that statement from a farmer the other night as I sat in on the Texas Farm Bureau District 8 Policy Development meeting. The discussion centered on the topic of Texas water rights with regard to underground water.

That comment is so true. The Texas population is expected to surge to 35 million in the next 30 years. Water will determine where that growth will occur, or if it will occur.

You may think the water beneath your land is yours. Technically, Texas law says it is. However, groundwater districts control it. Municipalities covet it. Entrepreneurs want to sell it. And the Texas legislature and the courts will eventually decide its fate.

With all those mouths trying to drink out of the same pitcher, do you know what your rights are? Neither does anyone else, for sure. Interpretations of private property rights attached to underground water in Texas are as muddy as the Brazos River at flood stage.

The Legislature is likely to clear that stream this legislative session, making significant changes to how groundwater is managed in Texas. Cases are also being heard before the Texas Supreme Court that could define the rights of Texas property owners in regards to groundwater.

Current Texas law recognizes the landowners’ rights to water beneath their property. It also gives groundwater districts the authority to regulate it. There are two schools of thought concerning groundwater as a property right in Texas.

The first is the position generally favored by groundwater conservation districts (GCD)—that groundwater is not property until the owner physically captures it. Many GCDs like this approach because it allows them to protect historic or existing use by denying new groundwater users the right to the water. This position allows GCDs the legal right to deny a property owner the right to drill a well or pump groundwater without that property owner claiming that their groundwater has been “taken” from them. “Takings” claims could include the right of the property owner to be compensated for the loss of rights to the groundwater.

Many landowners favor the second approach because it gives them an ownership in groundwater that is protected from a “taking” by a groundwater conservation district. In fact, Texas Farm Bureau’s policy currently supports this opinion: “We believe the right to capture groundwater in place is a vested property right.” The reasoning is this: Groundwater is part of the surface estate of the property. The owner of the surface estate has a right to the groundwater, just like he has the right to sand, gravel or limestone that is part of the surface estate. Under this argument, a groundwater district cannot deny the right of the property owner to obtain a permit and pump groundwater. Under this argument, a district would have to reduce the pumping of existing users to allow new users to capture groundwater.

So who’s right? Take away the regulatory authority of the GCDs and we could have a groundwater free-for-all in Texas. Take away the protection of a “taking” of groundwater from the landowner and you have potential for abuse by GCDs. And there’s a whole host of issues in-between.

There’s an old saying that you don’t miss the water until the well runs dry. Folks, the level is getting low.

There are no easy solutions when it comes to determining Texas water rights…just lots of questions. How do you feel?

Using CFL Bulbs Provides You Cheap Electricity

Many people have been clamoring for the continued rise in electricity bills and these increases always sounds unabated. This has really become the problem of many people around the world. The use of electricity nowadays is very important, not only on household uses, but as well as the many companies who cannot produce their products, or who cannot maintain the freshness of their farm produce without electricity.

Any increase in electricity also results to spiraling prices of basic commodities and every consumer is badly affected. The effects of this increase in power rates is not so much of a burden to businessmen since they can easily get back on increases by also increasing their products. The manufacturing companies, whose operation is also affected, can easily channel their losses to the consumers. Truly, the end losers here are the consumers.

The choice of lighting bulb is obviously one of best solutions to spend less on electricity. Well, I can assure you with that. I was once a lavish spender of electricity by using bulbs with yellow-colored lights during night time, until somebody introduced me to use bulbs which can really save much energy. I was shocked to see in my next bill the consumption was almost half only of the previous reading. From that time on I’ve changed all my regular incandescent bulbs to those that were introduced to me and amazing things happen. My electricity bill was always much less than my previous billings. What I am referring to here is the CFL energy saving bulbs. CFL bulbs are very efficient based on my experience. They consume only at least 25% of electricity. This means for every $1000 electricity bill you currently have you can save at least $750 – which 75% less than your previous electricity consumption. Not bad at all, isn’t it?

The second idea I am going to share here about saving on energy is by installing LED lights in your homes. This is done by replacing low-voltage halogen with the 12v LED lights. Now, what is the difference between CFL energy savings with the LED light bulbs? Many people say LED lights are ten times more efficient than incandescent lighting. You could just imagine saving $900 from your previous $1000 electricity bill. That’s really great news!

When a friend introduced me to using the CFL bulbs so that I can save energy and my electricity consumption, I immediately shifted to CFL bulbs. It’s more savings from my monthly budget for electricity, instead of ‘bleeding my wallet’ because I cannot pay my electricity bills on time.

Many scientists have been trying to find solutions to this power rate hike problem and little by little they are able to discover all these solutions. The leader in government should also exert more efforts in giving out solutions to the problem. Electricity consumption should not only be lesser in others parts of the globe but the lower electricity rate should be felt by all power consumers of the world. Yes, nowadays, we cannot live without electricity but it should be affordable to every consumer.

Japanese gardens have gained a reasonable fame in the European or Western countries over the recent years. Japanese gardens are known for there unique blend of hard man made elements with soft natural characteristics and calm mood. The main aim of Japanese gardens is to produce the harmony and balance between the atmosphere and surroundings. These gardens to large an extent represent the pictures of their spiritual values and philosophical norms. The traditional elements involve in Japanese gardens are stone, water, bamboo, bridges, ornaments and plants.

A Japanese influence in the gardens is remarkably very colorful, exotic and somehow subtropical. However, it is not always possible to make the image of the Japanese garden equal to the traditional art form. It is hard for western societies to acquire all the orient features and aspects of the Japanese garden. However, this is also true that you need not to understand all these to bring something of the feel of orient into your garden.

There are so many components and elements which you can use to introduce the Japanese feel into your garden, for instance, you can use bamboo, an oriental element; you can even introduce some of the fundamental principles of Japanese landscape designs; and last but not the least, introduction of water features. Water features are the main key of the Japanese style gardens. It can be in any form from an exquisite water pool to an ordinary shishi-odoshi (deer scarer in Japanese), spilling water into a bowl occasionally.

Shape of the pond or pool is mostly not a matter of concern in Japanese gardens. It can be round or square or anything, the only specialty of these gardens is to bring the perfect picture of countryside’s landscape into the garden. These islands may look prominent or any mountainous illustration through rocks and stones closely packed and deliberately arranged along with shrubby oriental evergreens, i.e. the Japanese maple or Japanese azalea.

In some oriental gardens shoreline creativity is also used. Niches and promontories have been created with rocks and planting. The water entry passage is concealed with planting.

Another water feature is low, flat island. This sort of island hint briefly to a moor and different sort of grasses, sedges, irises are used to plant at the edges. Tidal islands are usually represented by submerged rocks and tiny grassy plants.

Running water is another feature of such gardens. This feature is not confined to rills, cascades and wandering streams. Bamboo pipe work can also be used along with large stones and variety of gravels to provide the contrast and variable looks under the water level.

Where water is the major scheme of the garden, the selection of plant is of sole importance. The choice and arrangement of the plants may not be orient but they must be in right shape. Bamboos, grasses, irises, ferns and primulas are enough to provide your garden a Japanese theme along with the appropriate water features. time. Instead, decide what your priorities are: Think about where it would be

easiest for you to begin. Start there, and work up to the bigger or more difficult

issues.

Your priorities may not be the same as other people’s, but that’s okay:

They’re yours, and you’re entitled to them. Be prepared to adjust them as

new information becomes available, however. Research is ongoing in most

areas of green living, so arguments will change. In the meantime, take one

small step every time you’re ready to, and keep aspiring to be greener.

We chose them specifically because they make you significantly greener with minimal effort. Examples include replacing your light bulbs as they burn out with compact fluorescent models and replacing your cleaning supplies as they run out with environmentally friendly ones.

Another tip that’s super-easy to implement is to buy items with less packaging.

Consider, for example, what would happen if you bought toilet paper in

double rolls, which contain twice as much toilet paper in a roll than regularsize

rolls. That cuts down the number of cardboard tubes inside the rolls by

half, and it also decreases the amount of plastic that’s used to wrap the packages!

If you recycle the cardboard tubes that remain, even better.

And if you slit the plastic wrap open only at the top of the package, you can reuse the wrap, perhaps as a trash bag. See how easy that was?

Then assess your waste to see what can be reused or recycled — what’s waste to you may be useful to your friends and neighbors or to a nonprofit group.

Making Your Greenbacks Even Greener

When it comes to spending and saving money, your dollars can go a long way

toward greening your lifestyle. Start with the necessities of life — choosing

what you eat and what you wear — and assess how you can do both in ways

issues to the banking arena, looking at where you can park your money and

how you can invest your savings to help you as well as your community

One possible effect of global warming is the further reduction of groundwater sources. Decreasing the demand that people place on water sources is essential in order to continue having enough water to go around. Thankfully, it’s not too late to turn the situation around — to make the changes that the planet and its people need for a safe, healthy, prosperous, and compassionate future. Changes need to happen quickly, however: According to the United Nations, some parts of the world are nearing the tipping point, after which the damage will be irreparable. A useful way to understand your impact on the environment is to measure your ecological footprint, which is the land needed to support your consumption of goods and resources. Think of it as a way of describing the amount of land required to farm your food, mine your energy sources, transport your goods and services, and hold your waste. You make decisions every day that have an impact on the planet: choosing between the car and local rapid transit, for example, or selecting local or organic fresh food instead of packaged, processed food that has been transported long distances. Think about the impact that each individual decision has, and weigh the pros and cons of your everyday actions. Carbon emissions are another measure of your ecological footprint. Growing A Healthy Tomato Plant

Tomatoes are relatively easy to grow, they are hardy and can take a fair amount of stress without throwing in the towel. However there are definitely measures that we can take to ensure that we have the absolute best results that we can hope to achieve with our tomato garden.

Of these probably the most paramount is going to be the methods we use to fertilize our plants. Not because of potential loss though. Whilst bad fertilization is a problem the plant will usually survive most fertilization mistakes (In fact we are far more likely to do damage to our plants if we get planting, pruning or watering incorrect). No, the reason that we want to get our fertilization right is because of the benefits this brings

The plain fact of the matter is that good fertilization is really the key to growing fantastic fruits.

Think of it this way… fertilization is simply another way of talking about soil nutrient levels and tomato plants have very definite and understood nutrient requirements. If you get these right then you can get tremendous growth in your tomato plants.

Here of course is something to ponder. And that is… what, exactly, are you looking to achieve with your tomatoes? As far as I am concerned the answer to that question is to get as many large full juicy fruits as I can, for as long as I can, throughout the growing season. I am not after a vast shrubbery of green… I want lots of red (and black, yellow, white and purple) fruits… and I act accordingly when it comes to fertilizing plants.

As tomatoes are a flowering fruit they produce best with a balanced nutrient supply… hence I ensure that they receive a feed of 1-1-1 ratio until they are at second set. I do not feed them high nitrogen dosages at the start as this strategy is better for greenery. From around the time of second set I will start to gradually increase the amount of nitrogen and potassium received as the needs of the plant increases for these nutrients as it grows larger.

Although not quite as important in achieving this end as fertilization, clever pruning can also have a very positive effect on the quantity and quality of your fruits. Essentially your pruning should all be towards focusing the sugar (energy) supply toward the production of fruits. You can achieve this by removing branches and leaves that are not required to maintain the plants growth and health.

So plant your plants in a fine soil, stack them full of the correct nutrients and focus their energy toward producing bountiful fruits and you will enjoy a bumper harvest… Bon Appetit!
