I wanted to reduce my heating costs and since I have in-floor heating and radiant heating I could benefit from using thermal energy. I looked at flat panels but because they are static, they only could provide me with energy for about 4 hours a day. I have a huge house, about 4,000 sq. feet and we have cold winters (-20 degrees) and I needed to have a high amount of hot water, so that’s where I got interested in solar concentrators. These systems are able to produce high amounts of thermal heat and are perfect for projects that require high amounts of solar hot water heating. I got a distributor to install the SolarBeam since I could not install it myself.
Here is the process for installing the system:
Step 1
The solar hot water heating system should be installed at a south facing location. The dish needs to be placed in a location that is 20ft away from obstructions (i.e. trees, buildings, etc.)
A hole 9 feet deep needs to be excavated for the foundation.
Step 2
Install the 8 foot post along with gear train. This piece came as one system and so no huge assembly was required.
Step 3
Install the ribs that will hold the reflective petals. These ribs are made from aluminum and are very light. Just needed a scaffold to install the ribs.
Step 4
Install the 16 reflective petals. Each petal weighs about 7 pounds. Just simply screw it into the holes in the ribs and you will be done in less than 6 hours.
Step 5
Install the heat exchanger and the 4 arms that hold it in place. The heat exchanger is a small box (10″ x 10″) that collects the thermal energy and heats up the water that is being passed through.
Step 6
Install the tubing that runs through the heat exchanger and connect it to the tubing that you installed in the ground
Step 7
Hire a plumber to connect the pump station to the existing hot water tanks. If you want more storage capacity, buy extra hot water tanks because this system can heat a 120 gallon tank to 90 degrees in 3 hours.
Step 8
Install the tracking system and calibrate to your latitude and longitude so it will automatically start tracking the sun
Step 9
Check your energy bill and see the reduction in your energy costs and smile. In 2011, I will be installing a photovoltaic module on this system to produce up to 4kW of electricity. So that will be even more energy savings. I may even sell some of the power back to the grid.
I am really happy with my solar hot water heating system. My energy bill has dropped significantly and I am also reducing greenhouse gasses. I think that if more people used solar hot water heating then we would reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse emissions.

In this day and age the renewable energy industry is very much alive. Much has been blame to the rise in cost of any commercial solar panels, solar chargers, solar inverters, and installation for a simple solar energy system to be out of reach. The true reason why solar energy products are so high is not because it’s a high tech product but rather the cost of producing it.
Most of us, the public at large, tend to forget that to produce a single kilo of raw material that makes up a solar panel is really expensive. This material is also the same material that is used to make computer chips. Yes that’s right a ‘computer chip’.
I will not go into too much detail of what the process of these materials, but I can give you an idea of how much it cost. The market value of this material is not cheap, it cost about $550 (conservative figure) a kilo back before the financial crisis around March of 2008. Now it’s so low the market price for this commodity is at $150 per kilo and projections show it will go below $100 in 2011.
The cost to produce one panel dependent on size, also contributes to the cost. Now the price of producing one panel of a standard size, and before the added cost of shipping and other extra cost, comes up around $125 (really conservative price).
After all its massed produce and quality checked and that’s another cost to add on. I estimate that a really efficient solar panel would now cost $225. To make things simpler I will add in alot of other stuff to the panel and the extra things that is needed to go in conjunction with the panels.
The real cost of producing one efficient panel is around $225 to $300. That’s it!
Now here’s the real reason why a solar home energy system might cost alot, it is the added equipment and battery storage. The components range from a simple $350 to $10,000 on low to middle end. This is the real reason why it’s expensive, and its added features give the solar energy system out of reach from the public.
There are some might argue that the cost of producing electricity cost per watt, they are correct in one aspect, but the affordability to the average American household is out of reach. This is just my opinion on this so just give my points to ponder.

Solar Power – The Converters
The regulator provides DC power at a specific voltage. Converters and inverters
are used to adjust the voltage to match the requirements of your load.
DC/DC Converters
DC/DC converters transform a continuous voltage to another continuous
voltage of a different value. There are two conversion methods which can be
used to adapt the voltage from the batteries: linear conversion and switching
conversion.
Linear conversion lowers the voltage from the batteries by converting excess
energy to heat. This method is very simple but is obviously inefficient.
Switching conversion generally uses a magnetic component to temporarily
store the energy and transform it to another voltage. The resulting voltage
can be greater, less than, or the inverse (negative) of the input voltage.
The efficiency of a linear regulator decreases as the difference between the
input voltage and the output voltage increases. For example, if we want to
convert from 12 V to 6 V, the linear regulator will have an efficiency of only
50%. A standard switching regulator has an efficiency of at least 80%.
DC/AC Converter or Inverter
Inverters are used when your equipment requires AC power. Inverters chop
and invert the DC current to generate a square wave that is later filtered to
approximate a sine wave and eliminate undesired harmonics. Very few
inverters actually supply a pure sine wave as output. Most models available
on the market produce what is known as “modified sine wave”, as their voltage
output is not a pure sinusoid. When it comes to efficiency, modified sine
wave inverters perform better than pure sinusoidal inverters.
Be aware that not all the equipment will accept a modified sine wave as voltage
input. Most commonly, some laser printers will not work with a modified
sine wave inverter. Motors will work, but they may consume more power than
if they are fed with a pure sine wave. In addition, DC power supplies tend to
warm up more, and audio amplifiers can emit a buzzing sound.
Aside from the type of waveform, some important features of inverters include:
• Reliability in the presence of surges.
Inverters have two power ratings:
one for continuous power, and a higher rating for peak power. They are
capable of providing the peak power for a very short amount of time, as
when starting a motor. The inverter should also be able to safely interrupt
itself (with a circuit breaker or fuse) in the event of a short circuit, or if the
requested power is too high.
• Conversion efficiency. Inverters are most efficient when providing 50% to
90% of their continuous power rating. You should select an inverter that
most closely matches your load requirements. The manufacturer usually
provides the performance of the inverter at 70% of its nominal power.
• Battery charging. Many inverters also incorporate the inverse function:
the possibility of charging batteries in the presence of an alternative source
of current (grid, generator, etc). This type of inverter is known as a charger/
inverter.
• Automatic fall-over. Some inverters can switch automatically between
different sources of power (grid, generator, solar) depending on what is available.
When using telecommunication equipment, it is best to avoid the use of DC/
AC converters and feed them directly from a DC source. Most communications
equipment can accept a wide range of input voltage.

While ancient history is full of solar uses, it was not until the 1900s that scientists truly started embarking on the research that leads to today’s solar power generation.
Auguste Mouchout understood the need for alternative energy during the Industrial Revolution. When people were using fossil fuels to heat their homes and create electricity, he understood the long-term effect of this overuse. When no one listened, he chose to investigate further and was successful in creating the first known solar motor. By 1861, he had also invented a steam engine that ran completely on the sun’s power, but the cost of the machine led to its failure.
Throughout the latter years of the 1800s, European scientists continued to work with solar energy and reflect on its potential real life uses if the power collection were to be perfected.
The first huge step in the history of solar power that moved us towards the solar revolution occurred in 1921. Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize that year for his research in what would later be called photovoltaic cells. His physics research on the photoelectric effect was the cornerstone to the creation of the same solar cells used today.
By 1953, Bell Laboratories designed the first solar cell. The cell, created by three scientists, created electrical current that was measurable – a huge feat at the time. The solar cells cost about $300 a watt to generate electricity from the sun (today that amount is about $5 a watt due to technological advances).
During the 1950s and 1960s, NASA was in the middle of the race to space which furthered solar energy research even more. Satellites and spacecraft used the power of the sun to create electricity, but the technology remained too expensive for anyone but the government to use. The tables were turned, however, when the primary source of energy, oil, was pulled out from under the United States as an affordable fuel source.
In 1973, an oil embargo caused the price of oil to double in 24 hours. In a panic, government officials quickly looked for an alternative energy source and the development of Bell Laboratories in 1953 came to mind. The government invested large amounts of money into the design and the power of the sun was soon realized.

The future is brighter than ever before for solar energy. The price of solar cells is dropping and smaller units are now quite affordable for anyone and everyone to buy. The good news is that these larger systems are already proving their worth and economies of scale mean that they provides a much faster return on investment.

Before making any investment into renewable technology it is always a good idea to get professional advice. Talk to an alternative energy expert about what you want to use renewable energy for, and give them some details about the location where you want to use it. From this they can provide you with an idea of which technology is suitable and any alternatives that might be on offer. Let’s take a fresh look at a couple of tired old sayings you’ve probably heard a million times, and examine what they mean when comes to raising environmental awareness and encouraging everyday citizens to do their part to preserve the planet for future generations.
Here’s the first: “Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?” In our world, this classic dilemma could be rephrased as “Which comes first, environmental awareness or environmental action?” You could be forgiven for answering that environmental awareness comes first, because that it is how it appears to the untrained eye.
But social and behavior research often finds otherwise — small actions lead to big attitude changes, and then on to the big behavior changes. In his classic book, “Fostering Sustainable Behavior,” social marketing guru Doug McKenzie Mohr cites a number of cases where the simplest possible behavior — such as holding a flashlight for an energy auditor — becomes the first step in a journey that leads to major energy conservation efforts around the house.
I like to tell my clients that the smallest and easiest of environmental actions — replacing an incandescent lightbulb, making a $30 donation, signing an electronic petition — matter. They matter a lot if you see them as a kind of “gateway drug” for the person who does them. If you can make that person aware of how good it feels to make a little difference, some will come back looking for a bigger fix. Next time around, they might insulate their attic, make a large donation, or speak up for the environmental at a public hearing.
Here’s the second old saying, from the world of physics: “A body at rest stays at rest, a body in motion stays in motion.” In the world of behavior change psychology, that might be rephrased this way: “a body that pays lip service to the environment will probably keep doing that, but a body that takes a first step for the environment is likely to take a second.”
When we set out to just raise environmental awareness, what we often end up producing is lip service, instead. If you want that awareness to lead to some action, it helps a lot to define that action and aim for that directly.
What both of these reinterpretations have in common, is that they point to the importance of beginning with behavior for your environmental communications. Set a goal of motivating your audience to take some small action, and follow up afterwards to lavish your audience with praise and gratitude — and suggest the next, more meaningful action they can take.
