Indoor air pollution refers to the presence of gaseous and particulate contaminants in the indoor air environment. Contamination of indoor air is particularly hazardous because people spend about 65 to 95 percent of their lives indoors and exposure to some of the contaminants may cause serious health problems. However, for taking effective control measures, it is necessary to identify the sources of air pollutants.
Sources of Indoor Air Pollution
Both natural and man-made sources can deteriorate indoor air quality. Natural sources include soils and water that release radon decay products, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fungi. In addition, some animal pets also release certain allergens affecting sensitive individuals. Other than natural sources, many human actions cause emissions of dangerous air pollutants into the indoor environment.
Human-produced air contaminants originate from various types of appliances, combustion sources such as vehicle engines, wood burning and unvented space heating using gas and kerosene. Building materials are also a significant source of particulates in air. Some pollutants are generated by individual behavior, such as tobacco smoking and through use of consumer products.
Effects of Indoor Air pollution
Effects of poor indoor air quality upon humans and animals are dependent upon exposure and the concentration of pollutants. Effects experienced by humans include respiratory illness, decreased lung function and other physiological changes. Particulate matter and formaldehyde cause irritation of eyes and produce changes in pulmonary function. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, nitrates and methylene chlorides affect heart and brain by causing changes in carboxy hemoglobin.
Lead has been identified to have neurological effects, especially in infants and children. Benzene has been shown to produce a form of leukemia while both radon and asbestos have been proven to cause lung cancer in humans. Studies of effects on animals have shown results similar to those found in humans.
Indoor air contamination can also have corrosive effects on materials. Outdoor pollutants can infiltrate and interact with indoor pollutants to generate new substances that are detrimental to materials; an example is outdoor ozone interacting with indoor volatile organic compounds to produce corrosive compounds affecting electronic equipment. Extensive damage to rubber, paint and dyes, leather and textiles, and ceramics has been demonstrated by indoor air pollutants.
Indoor Air Pollution Control
The first and foremost control measure on indoor air contamination is source removal including water, plants, pets, and certain building materials. Another effective consideration is reduction in source emissions through manufacturing processes, changes in building materials, prevention of water leakage, and source usage recommendations. Similarly, reduction of exposure to humans can be achieved using standard direct methods such as filtration and cleaning, as well as good building and source design.
Government agencies can monitor product manufacturing, promote ventilation in workplaces, use public health education to help people minimize risks and encourage safe indoor air, and enforce regulations (such as banning tobacco smoking in workplaces and public buildings). Finally, individuals can limit their exposures, especially in residences, by several measures, including avoidance of sources that degrade the quality of indoor air.

The quality of indoor air is badly affected by addition of contaminants from both natural and human-caused sources. Many of these contaminants such as VOCs are harmful for human health and may cause terrible ailments. Some of the pollutants in indoor air are detrimental to objects made of rubber, ceramics and metals and result in material losses. The indoor air pollution can be controlled by removing sources, reducing emissions and minimizing exposures to humans and materials. Both Government regulations and public education are vital for effective results.

Many people have been clamoring for the continued rise in electricity bills and these increases always sounds unabated. This has really become the problem of many people around the world. The use of electricity nowadays is very important, not only on household uses, but as well as the many companies who cannot produce their products, or who cannot maintain the freshness of their farm produce without electricity.
Any increase in electricity also results to spiraling prices of basic commodities and every consumer is badly affected. The effects of this increase in power rates is not so much of a burden to businessmen since they can easily get back on increases by also increasing their products. The manufacturing companies, whose operation is also affected, can easily channel their losses to the consumers. Truly, the end losers here are the consumers.
The choice of lighting bulb is obviously one of best solutions to spend less on electricity. Well, I can assure you with that. I was once a lavish spender of electricity by using bulbs with yellow-colored lights during night time, until somebody introduced me to use bulbs which can really save much energy. I was shocked to see in my next bill the consumption was almost half only of the previous reading. From that time on I’ve changed all my regular incandescent bulbs to those that were introduced to me and amazing things happen. My electricity bill was always much less than my previous billings. What I am referring to here is the CFL energy saving bulbs. CFL bulbs are very efficient based on my experience. They consume only at least 25% of electricity. This means for every $1000 electricity bill you currently have you can save at least $750 – which 75% less than your previous electricity consumption. Not bad at all, isn’t it?
The second idea I am going to share here about saving on energy is by installing LED lights in your homes. This is done by replacing low-voltage halogen with the 12v LED lights. Now, what is the difference between CFL energy savings with the LED light bulbs? Many people say LED lights are ten times more efficient than incandescent lighting. You could just imagine saving $900 from your previous $1000 electricity bill. That’s really great news!
When a friend introduced me to using the CFL bulbs so that I can save energy and my electricity consumption, I immediately shifted to CFL bulbs. It’s more savings from my monthly budget for electricity, instead of ‘bleeding my wallet’ because I cannot pay my electricity bills on time.
Many scientists have been trying to find solutions to this power rate hike problem and little by little they are able to discover all these solutions. Japanese gardens have gained a reasonable fame in the European or Western countries over the recent years. Japanese gardens are known for there unique blend of hard man made elements with soft natural characteristics and calm mood. These gardens to large an extent represent the pictures of their spiritual values and philosophical norms. The traditional elements involve in Japanese gardens are stone, water, bamboo, bridges, ornaments and plants.
A Japanese influence in the gardens is remarkably very colorful, exotic and somehow subtropical. Tomatoes are relatively easy to grow, they are hardy and can take a fair amount of stress without throwing in the towel. However there are definitely measures that we can take to ensure that we have the absolute best results that we can hope to achieve with our tomato garden.
Of these probably the most paramount is going to be the methods we use to fertilize our plants. Not because of potential loss though. Whilst bad fertilization is a problem the plant will usually survive most fertilization mistakes (In fact we are far more likely to do damage to our plants if we get planting, pruning or watering incorrect). No, the reason that we want to get our fertilization right is because of the benefits this brings
The plain fact of the matter is that good fertilization is really the key to growing fantastic fruits.
Think of it this way… fertilization is simply another way of talking about soil nutrient levels and tomato plants have very definite and understood nutrient requirements. If you get these right then you can get tremendous growth in your tomato plants.
Here of course is something to ponder. And that is… what, exactly, are you looking to achieve with your tomatoes? As far as I am concerned the answer to that question is to get as many large full juicy fruits as I can, for as long as I can, throughout the growing season. I am not after a vast shrubbery of green… I want lots of red (and black, yellow, white and purple) fruits… and I act accordingly when it comes to fertilizing plants.
As tomatoes are a flowering fruit they produce best with a balanced nutrient supply… hence I ensure that they receive a feed of 1-1-1 ratio until they are at second set. I do not feed them high nitrogen dosages at the start as this strategy is better for greenery. From around the time of second set I will start to gradually increase the amount of nitrogen and potassium received as the needs of the plant increases for these nutrients as it grows larger.
Although not quite as important in achieving this end as fertilization, clever pruning can also have a very positive effect on the quantity and quality of your fruits. Essentially your pruning should all be towards focusing the sugar (energy) supply toward the production of fruits. You can achieve this by removing branches and leaves that are not required to maintain the plants growth and health.
So plant your plants in a fine soil, stack them full of the correct nutrients and focus their energy toward producing bountiful fruits and you will enjoy a bumper harvest… Bon Appetit!

Commercial vehicle lighting, essential for any business whose employees are working in maintenance vehicles, emergency vehicles or otherwise at risk modes of transportation, has caught up with the times. It’s as cost effective and environmentally friendly as the nearest light bulb. Gone are the days when all commercial vehicle illumination involved high wattage light bulbs that lasted for weeks at a time – these days, a company can provide its vehicles with the brighter, longer lasting hit of an LED for pretty much the same money. Though in a welcome concession to the possible expense of refitting a whole fleet with different light shoes, most commercial vehicle lighting companies are also supplying original (albeit long life) bulbs too.
Question: is it more expensive to convert a fleet to using LED type bulbs, or to continue using the old style hot shoe bulb at a longer life rating? We’ve all become aware that environmental costs are not always measured in direct transfer. Sometimes, it’s actually more labour and factory effective, as well as cost effective, to retain the “old” equipment than to invest in new. Particularly if that old equipment still has a lot of life in it. What we’re asking here is this: if, for example, a company has a set of reasonably new trucks, is it better for them to buy commercial vehicle lighting to fit the standard old illuminations or should they scrap their existing fittings, thereby effectively making a waste of all the energy that was used to make them, in favour of new ones?
The answer, of course, depends on the situation. In circumstances such as the ones outlined above it would be environmentally unsound to discard the new fittings before they have lived a useful life. The energy it takes to make fittings in the first place has to be offset by their use otherwise they might as well not have been made at all. That’s why the better commercial vehicle lighting suppliers are deliberately not railroading their customers into buying only LED bulbs: quite sensibly, they’re allowing them to go through a period of adjustment, phasing out their old kit as it becomes obsolete rather than just throwing it away for no reason.
It’s heartening to see an industry actually making some sensible adjustments for environmental purposes, rather than just (as many of us have been wont to do) getting all hysterical and chucking away a load of perfectly good kit before it has reached its sale by date. Bear in mind that one is always being exhorted to waste less material. There can’t be a bigger waste of material than discarding serviceable commercial vehicle lighting fittings (the actual shoes that the bulbs sit in) just because they don’t support newer, more energy efficient products. Wait until the old has run out, then bring in the new. That way, all the energy that went into making the bulbs that still exist won’t have gone to waste without reason. That’s a solution that saves material, saves money and still lets businesses thrive.

Beneficial Microbe Inoculation and Maintenance
The heart of the organic hydroponics system is the cultivation of beneficial microbes in the growing environment. Products containing beneficial microbes help to expand the root surface which increases nutrient uptake as well as creating a balanced biology, and an increased concentration of chitin and cellulose recycling organisms.
Healthy, growing environments include both beneficial bacteria and fungi in a wide variety. Bacteria and fungi are consumed by the microbial biology contained within the nutrient solution, and are released as nutrients that can easily be taken up by the root system. A full-range of microbial biology significantly reduces the minimum amount of nutrient required for vigorous plant growth, while still allowing for the use of the same level of nutrient as before beneficial microbe inoculation for maximum nutrient uptake.

Another option for inoculating the nutrient solution with beneficial microbes is the use of some form of compost or vermiculture tea. Some growers brew compost tea in a simple set up consisting of a large bucket, small air pump and a nylon stocking to be used as a tea bag.

With the flood-to-waste system, you start with pure pH adjusted water, properly mixed nutrient solution and beneficial microbes, and use this solution to water the plants. With a quality media mix, plants may only need to be watered every two to seven days, but make sure not to allow the mix to completely dry between watering. Trial and error will quickly allow one to learn how much nutrient solution is needed to minimize the amount that drains out the bottom of the growing containers. If a recirculating system is used, change the reservoir solution each week.
Flushing a system with plain de-chlorinated pH adjusted water for seven to ten days before harvest will improve the aroma and flavor of produce. In a recirculating hydroponics system, change the plain reservoir water with fresh water every day for these last days.

A lawn which has been untouched by man-made chemicals for more than five years is considered to be organic; however if it hasn’t been maintained it could be struggling for survival, and this will begin to show sooner or later. Just because “organic” is the goal, it does not give the owner license to abandon care, which is often the case. An organic lawn will require maintenance, just as a drugged lawn does, otherwise the weeds will take over and the organic gardener will lose their causal inspiration.
Maintaining an Organic Lawn
The first rule to organic lawn maintenance, is to mow the lawn high and to leave the grass clippings on the lawn as these will act as a natural fertilizer without causing thatch. If the grass is cut too short it will:
- Dry out faster as there will be less natural shade and the roots will not grow as deeply, meaning it will require more water.
- Weeds will grow easier as there will be less competition, allowing the weeds to shoot up above the grass.
- The grass will grow faster as it will be in a panic to restore itself. This means it will need to be mowed more frequently. If it is cut longer, it will not “panic” and will instead put more energy into growing roots, rather than tops, encouraging a stronger, thicker lawn.
The second rule to maintaining an organic lawn is to water less frequently, but to use more water at these times. Wait until the lawn is showing signs of dehydration, then water deeply to ensure the water is reaching the deepest roots. This will encourage the roots to grow to deeper levels in order to reach the water, and it will ensure that the new weed seeds cannot access the water as it is too far down. Watering frequently on the other hand, will help to propagate new weed seeds.
The third rule is to ensure the lawn has enough good quality soil. If there is less than eight inches of top soil, then consider adding more. This can be done by putting a good layer of soil or compost on top of an established lawn. It will be muddy for a while, but within two weeks the grass will have grown through, and will now be enjoying the benefits of extra soil. If compost is used to top dress, there will be the added reward of natural fertilization, as compost contains many nutrients necessary for growing a healthy lawn.
Finally, to grow and encourage a healthy organic lawn, it is important to aerate in the spring. Aerating a lawn allows water and organic fertilizers to penetrate deeper, therefore accessing the roots. It also helps to loosen highly compacted soil, encouraging roots to grow. Furthermore, aerating helps to control thatch, which is a layer of decomposing grass stems and roots. If thatch is thick it can prevent water and air from getting to the lawn’s roots, and can harbour pests.
To review; it is important to cut the lawn at a high setting, to water deeply but less frequently, to top dress with organic compost, and to aerate every spring. There are also some very good organic fertilizers on the market which can be applied if compost isn’t used. When a lawn isn’t properly cared for it struggles and becomes weedy and brown, which may be discouraging for the owner, sometimes leading to chemical applications. However, if these organic lawn care steps are followed a thick green carpet will be maintained into the future.

Solar soil sterilization offers the organic gardener an organic weed and pest control method that leaves the soil free from weeds, nematodes and harmful insects, yet ready to plant with new crops. Soil sterilization harnesses solar power to heat soil temperatures above what weeds and pests can tolerate. Used in June, July and August, and September, soil sterilization creates a weed and pest-free garden bed without adding harmful chemicals to the soil.
About Soil Sterilization and Organic Weed Control Methods
Soil sterilization uses the sun’s rays to heat the soil to high temperatures. It’s totally natural, organic, and uses no fossil fuels. Best of all, it leaves behind no harmful chemical residue. Many organic farms and growers use soil sterilization on a massive scale, but the home gardener can use it on a much smaller scale to the same good effect. Gardeners must pull mature weeds from the treatment area and remove rocks, stumps and branches. Then the soil is ready for sterilization.
Equipment Needed for Solar Soil Sterilization and Organic Weed Killers
In addition to weed pulling equipment such as gardening gloves, rakes, hoes and a wheelbarrow to carry away the weeds. gardeners wishing to try the organic weed control method of solar soil sterilization need a large roll of heavy duty clear plastic and a shovel. Only heavy, clear plastic works for soil sterilization. Dark plastic doesn’t allow the sun’s rays to penetrate the soil and silver-coated or reflective plastic simply bounces the rays back off the soil surface. The idea is to allow as much of the sun’s rays onto the soil through the plastic to bake it like an oven.
How to Use Solar Soil Sterilization for Organic Gardening Pest and Weed Control
To use this method in the garden, follow these steps. Be sure to use this method during the hottest months of the year. In most gardening zones, June through September are the best months, but check with the local County Cooperative Extension office for local questions or general questions about soil sterilization.
- Determine the area to sterilized and purchase clear plastic to cover it.
- Pull mature weeds and remove any plants; soil sterilization kills anything under the plastic, so do not use it near any plants you wish to keep.
- Remove rocks, roots and any other debris.
- Gently hoe or rake the soil.
- Moisten the soil with water or wait until a rain shower.
- Pull the plastic taut over the area to be sterilized.
- Dig a little trench around the perimeter of the plastic, and bury the edges to form a tight seal.
- Allow the sun’s rays to bake through the plastic for at least four weeks.
- Check daily for holes in the plastic and check the edges. Both allow heat to escape. Fix holes and rebury the edges to recreate a tight seal.
- Remove plastic after at least four weeks have passed.
Cautions when Using Soil Sterilization
There are a few cautions to keep in mind when using this organic gardening weed control method. The heat generated by solar sterilization kills most weeds but some may germinate. If so, pull them out manually. The high temperatures usually kill insect larvae and insects, but they also kill beneficial bacteria and fungi that colonize the soil. Apply compost, compost tea, or an organic fertilizer to the area after soil sterilization is complete to encourage colonies of helpful soil bacteria to form again. Do not use this method on or around existing plants; it will kill or damage them. Be sure to remove any tall weeds, since weeds, rocks and sticks on the ground may poke through the plastic and prevent proper soil sterilization.

As society downsizes and simplifies lives the need to have items that serve more then one purpose becomes important. The skillet that doubles as a lid or the drinking glass that doubles as a measuring cup becomes inventions that address this movement. The movement of repurposing items has also made the jump easier through human ingenuity and creativity.
The project below provides the steps for a simple planter made from a suet feeder. This feeder/planter will provide year round enjoyment while addressing the modern view of the simple life.
The supplies needed are general and normally are supplies that every gardener or nature enthusiasts have on hand.
Suet Cake Feeder Planter
Supplies
- 1 Wire Suet Feeder with chain
- Natural burlap
- Good quality potting soil with slow release fertilizer
- Knife
- Scissors
- Plants such as marigolds, parsley, nasturtiums, and strawberry to name a few
- Optional-drip irrigation system
Steps
- Cut the natural burlap twice the size of the suet cake feeder.
- Lift the top of the suet cake feeder and carefully fit the natural burlap into the suet cake feeder making sure all corners are covered.
- Fill suet cake feeder with potting soil.
- Fold top of natural burlap over top of suet cake feeder and lower down on natural burlap.
- This natural burlap cube can be treated just like landscape cloth. Simply cut “x” into natural burlap and fold back.
- Plant into planter and fold “x” back down.
- This planter can be planted all around or just on the front, sides, and top. If the planter is planted all around then hang by the chain. If the suet feeder planter is planted only in the front then use it as a vertical planter and hang it flush against the wall.
Watering this type of planter can be accomplished by 3 methods. These include the following below but choosing the type of watering system depends on how and where the suet cake feeder planter is hung.
- Drip Irrigation-This type of watering system can be used if th esuet cake feeder planter can not be moved easily. But make sure the irrigation system is calabrated correctly so it does not ruin the wall or floor.
- Submerging-This type of watering consists of the suet cake feeder planter being submerged in a bucket of water and letting it drip dry before hanging back up.
- Wicking-This type of watering consist of taking the suet cake feeder planter and placing in a bucket with a small amount of water. The water will be wicked up through the planter but remember to let drip dry before hanging back up.
This type of planter can work solo as a hanging basket or hung together by chaining 1 suet cake feeder planter below another suet cake feeder planter creating a planter chain.
So when it is time to pack away that suet cake feeder for the summer think about the suet cake feeder planter.

In these days of concern for the environment what better then to use recycled goods in the garden. Most gardeners are, by nature, attuned to the natural environment around them so what better then to re-use and re-cycle in the garden. Here are some ideas to get the keen Eco friendly gardener started.
Using Recycled Items in the Compost Heap
- If the carpets in the house are made from natural fibers, empty the dust bag from the vacuum cleaner into the compost bin.
- Old clothing made from natural fibers can be added but remember to remove buttons and zippers and cut into small strips for quick composting.
- Use feathers from old pillows to add nitrogen to the compost.
Recycling Containers in the Garden
- Large clear plastic bottles can be used as mini cloches. Cut the bottom off the bottle, remove the lid and place the wide bottom end over young seedlings to protect from frost, cold and pests.
- Cut small bottles into rings to place around the stems of plants to keep slugs away.
- Use washed yogurt containers or paper cups or cardboard milk cartons to plant young plants or seeds. Cardboard recycling is easy when using the cardboard containers. When big enough to plant out in the garden just plant the whole pot in the garden. As the paper or cardboard rots the roots of the plant will grow through. This is especially good for plants that don’t like to be transplanted such as nasturtium, bulbs and several of the vegetables.
- Use egg cartons to sow seeds and when big enough to plant cut around each egg divider to plant single plants in the garden. Plant the whole pot.
- Egg cartons are also useful to store potato tubers in while waiting for them to sprout.
Recycling Materials for Garden Ties.
- The inner tubes of bicycle tyres or other tyres can be cut into strips to use as ties for trees.
- Cut strips from old stockings/pantyhose to use as ties for climbing plants. They are soft so will not dig into the stems.
- Cut rings from old unlined rubber gloves and use them like elastic bands.
Using Recycled Foil in the Garden
- Scare birds away from the vegetable garden by attaching strips of aluminum foil to string.
- Scramble the guidance system of flying insect pests by laying squares of foil around the base of plants.
- Deter snails by winding strips of foil around the base of the plants.
- Sit heat loving indoor plants in a foil baking tray. The heat is captured by the sun and heats the bottom of the pot as well.
Getting Rid of Weeds by Recycling.
- Use old carpet or under-felt to lay over large areas of weed infested land. This will smother the weeds and prevent new weeds from germinating.
- Dampen newspaper and lay in several thick layers to prevent weeds in the garden. For a better look cover this with sawdust or another organic material as a mulch.
By using old clothing, containers, foil, tyres and feathers the environmentalist gardener can feel they are doing something toward saving the planet.

A solar-power battery air freshener includes a housing with an oscillating fan for emitting a fragrance to the surrounding environment. A solar-power battery utilizes energy derived from natural sunlight or light emitted from a regular light fixture in order to provide power to an oscillating device wherein a fan is connected.
The oscillating device includes a circuit, a coil, and magnets connected to vertical iron plates. A bracket is attached to the iron plate in such a manner that a fan can be attached to the bracket. A fragrance container is located directly below the fan. The oscillating movement of the fan disperses the fragrance emitted from the fragrance container out of the housing through air vents and into the room or vehicle being freshened.
A solar-power air freshener device comprising a front cover and a back cover, said front cover including a front wall, a top wall, a pair of opposing side walls, and a bottom wall, said back cover including a back wall, a top wall, a pair of opposing side walls, and a bottom wall, wherein the front cover and back cover are attached to form a housing, said bottom wall having a hole provided therein, said side walls and said front cover having air vents permitting air flow, a fragrance container containing scented materials inserted and held on said bottom wall through said hole, a solar battery mounted on said top wall, and a pendulum driving device secured on said back wall, said pendulum driving device including a driving coil, wherein the energy from the solar battery energizes the pendulum driving coil, said driving coil being held between pivotally attached metal plates on a pendulum housing, each of the metal plates having a magnet attached thereon, and one of the metal plates having a pendulum extending downwardly thereon and a fan blade attached on said pendulum.
It can be appreciated that air freshener have been in use for years. Typically, air freshener are comprised of U.S. Pat. No. 5,342,584, an air freshener device and cartridge with battery as means of power. U.S. Pat. No. 3,711,023, an air freshener device utilizing an air conditioning system which releases the evaporated volatile substance into the air to produce an odor. U.S. Pat. No. 3,990,848, an air flow induction device air freshening apparatus with a fan mounted in the housing. A fan driven by a motor is connected with the battery. U.S. Pat. No. 4,647,428, a room air freshening device that uses light bulb for vaporization of liquid. It works when the light bulb is turned on to heat and vaporize fragrance to permeate the room. U.S. Pat. No. 4,808,347, an air freshening apparatus which is plugged into a standard cigarette lighter socket of vehicles, utilizing an electric motor within the housing with a peopeller fastened to its shaft.
The main problem with conventional air freshener are that, as in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,342,584 and 3,990,848, the devices need the usage of batteries. The utilization of batteries to power the devices need more attention to the operation of the devices, need the constant change of batteries, add more cost to the device because of the cost of batteries. Another problem with conventional air freshener are that, as in U.S. Pat. No. 3,711,023, the device uses the air conditioning system to release the evaporated volatile substance into the air to produce an odor. The utilization of the air conditioning system makes the device depended on the time the air conditioning system is working. Another problem with conventional air freshener are that, as in U.S. Pat. No. 4,647,428, the room freshener device utilizes a light bulb that is plugged to the electrical system. The light bulb has to be turned on and at the same time consume electricity to function.
