As this nation debates health care reform and frets about the economy, a crawl space sealing contractor is preaching a unique path to recovery that he believes offers three essential benefits: improved home values, safer personal environments, and endless green-collar jobs.
The health care debate too often blinds us to an alarming truth: one of the greatest dangers to health is the accumulation of poisonous gases and other pollutants in the underbelly of residential real estate. Without proper mitigation, American homeowners and their families remain vulnerable to costly and deadly chronic respiratory diseases – regardless of health care innovations.
I’m convinced that as a nation we are ignoring our health and safety. It amazes me that even in this modern age, many homeowners and realtors are not aware that fifty percent of the air we breathe in our homes originates in the basement or crawl space. Radon gas, pesticides buried in the soil and the off-gassing of oriented strand board (OSB) that is used to build our floors and foundations, all contribute to the danger.
Encapsulating a crawl space is the first step when cleaning indoor air. The next step is installing an Active Moisture & Soil Gas Management System. This innovative approach uses a wireless Sunsei solar-powered shed ventilator to reverse a home’s field of pull so that soil gases and vapor are sucked out of the living environment. The fan is a back up measure that will ensure the removal of airborne contaminants in the event that the encapsulation is compromised.
If I had it my way, each community would sponsor a meeting of contractors, government officials, real estate professionals and homeowners. Together they would debate the facts and set much higher environmental standards for housing. Fortunately, doing so would spur the economy in two significant ways. First, improving indoor air quality through proper encapsulation of crawl spaces can actually add value to a home – and a “Cadillac” upgrade is relatively inexpensive – while cutting health costs. Next, the increased demand for these services would create green-collar job opportunities. In 2008, both presidential candidates articulated the need for creating this type of work force.
It’s a win-win situation. A contractor with his head held high could provide a quality ‘green’ service that will grow his business and perhaps allow him to hire more workers. The homeowner benefits from a service that won’t break the bank and eliminates a health risk. If I can add value to my home and get it back on the sale, why wouldn’t I do it?
Homeowners would be wise to calculate the dire financial consequences of job loss due to poor health, and then compare that to the cost of indoor air quality remediation. Contractors eager to expand revenue might do the math for prospective clients. Help the homeowner understand that they either have clean air or contaminated air. There is no in-between.
Home buyers and sellers are familiar with inspections for radon gas, a natural but poisonous soil gas. But there are other dangers. For example, many new sub-divisions are built on land that was once used for agriculture, where fertilizers and pesticides were prevalent. Buried, forgotten fuel tanks might also be a source of contamination. Homeowners should research the history of the land they live on.
Homeowners must always be aware that many contractors specialize. Perhaps they are HVAC or radon experts only. These professionals tend to micromanage one element that affects indoor air quality without looking at big picture.
Once again, the lack of correct information provides an opportunity for contractors and other workers who may be seeking a career change: Become a ‘green’ indoor air quality specialist. Those who answer the call may find themselves at the forefront of a movement that wants it all – clean air and economic stability.

As we all know by now since the media will not make us forget it: We are in a worldwide recession. We actually are in a Triple E crisis involving Energy; Economic and Environmental components. As a matter of fact as we get out of this recession we will dig even deeper into the Energy and Environmental crisis.
The good news is that with a crisis come opportunities that will remain after the recession. Hundreds of thousand of smart, experienced workers are left idle and looking for jobs that may never come back. Why not start a green business and take advantage of this “green trend”.
As far as the world’s attitude in concerned, becoming a more “green,” environmentally conscious society is a good thing. This is reflected everywhere in the economy from automobile companies going out of their way to produce more fuel efficient cars to electronic manufacturers designing energy efficient products. From everyday household appliances to the clothes you wear to work, companies are taking measures to ensure that the carbon footprint generated by their products is minimized.
The idea that only large companies should change their ways is wrong. In fact, small business can actually do a lot more to help the environment. The reason for this is simple: A small business doesn’t have miles of red tape to cut through, thousands of employees, or tons of legislation. Personally owned businesses can create and market green products today and help the world tomorrow. This also extends to people starting a new business. Why not start a green business?
With the massive momentum behind the green movement, anyone with determination can take full advantage of this relatively new and life saving trend. Not only can you experience the self satisfaction of helping out a horrendous environment, you can also capitalize on this ever-growing market. And don’t think for a minute that it’s exploitation or abusing the environmentally conscious – after all, if you’re not opening a business for profit, you may as well give your money away.
So, what “type” of business is green? Let’s examine a few types of eco-friendly businesses and how they can work for you and your prospective customers.
Green alternative products
People are looking for eco products made from recycled material, products that are more respectful of the environment. Your new business can help eco-aware consumers find alternate products that will contribute to reverse the adverse effects of global warming. Eco-friendly green products are available everywhere or you could create your own. For example, you could sell energy efficient fluorescent bulbs, biodegradable trash bags, LED products, eco-friendly cleaning products, etc. We design and market bags and accessories made from recycled material(Cirque du Soleil tents, advertising billboards) and are always looking for distributors.
Green energy payback: cutting costs
Consumers also wish to save money while saving the environment. What about an appliance store that sells solar powered water heaters, or energy-star certified kitchen appliances? Maybe a website that offers information and sells all types of CFL, LED and energy efficient light bulbs. These items have an endless demographic, especially the solar powered items. People love the idea of clean and free energy.
Eat green and organic
What about the organic foods trend? You could help people to grow their own foods. This idea is something that everybody can get onboard with. From people with the smallest apartments, to families with multiple acres of land, you could have a “kit” for everyone. We met someone recently who designed deeper planters for apartments to grow vegetables.
Green transportation
For people tired of burning fuel and taking gas-guzzling public transport to and from work, they might be in the market for bicycles or scooters. Your store could offer a break from the city bus norm. Becoming a dealer of regular and electric bikes and scooters can definitely cement your status in the business world.
There are thousands of green business ideas out there. But the main focus is to remain committed to being an eco-friendly purveyor of goods and services. These businesses may not make you rich but you will create your own green collar job and be independent from incompetent managers and massive layoffs .You can own and operate a business that you believe in, and moreover, people will believe in you.

With the US on the brink of change following Barack Obama’s historic triumph in the presidential election, those in the clean energy space were left considering what this would mean for the US’ burgeoning green economy. In a web video released last week for the Bi-Partisan Governors Global Climate Summit, the President-elect pledged new leadership to address global climate change.
In the speech, posted on YouTube, Obama reaffirmed his positive intentions, stating that there are few challenges facing the world today that are more pressing than tackling climate change.
Obama said, ‘Climate change and our dependence on foreign oil, if left unaddressed, will continue to weaken our economy and threaten our national security.
‘My presidency will mark a new chapter in America’s leadership in climate change that will strengthen our security and create millions of new jobs in the process,’ he added.
In the speech, he reiterated his pre-election plan to invest $150bn over the next ten years to catalyse private efforts to build a clean energy future, and the need to implement clear steps to propel the US to a leading position in terms of new energy resources.
His pledges included establishing annual targets to reduce emissions to their 1990 levels by 2020 and reduce them by an additional 80 per cent by 2050.
‘We will invest in solar power, wind power and next generation biofuels. We will tap nuclear power while making sure it is safe and we will develop clean coal technologies,’ he said in the speech.
For decades, the US has been the world’s largest petroleum consumer. However, a recent report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimated that 58 per cent of all petroleum consumed by the US in 2007 was imported. The long-term implications of this situation were something that Obama appears keen to address. The proposed $150bn investment into homeland energy sources would seem to reflect this commitment.
Obama continued, ‘This investment will not only help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil, making the US more secure, and will not only help us bring about a clean energy future saving the planet, but it also will help us transform our industries and steer our country out of this economic crisis by generating five million new green jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced.’
Obama also plans to introduce the Cap and Trade Program to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions by the recommended 80 per cent below 1990 levels, by 2050. Through this programme, all pollution credits will be auctioned with approximately $15bn of revenue per year going towards the development of clean energy. In a bid to limit dependency on foreign resources, this $15bn will be reinvested into domestic basic research, technology demonstration and aggressive commercial deployment and clean market creation.
Such a massive commitment would surely pave the way for new investment and future innovation as both industries and individuals clamour to meet this target.
The recent volatility in the price of oil and ensuing record highs have thrust the theme of alternative energy firmly to the fore, with investors paying increasing attention to the sector. In terms of venture capital alone, private investment in the renewable energy space topped $2.6bn in 2007.
The overriding theme in the industry is that the change of leadership will be a positive force.
Jim Pettit of clean energy-focused private equity firm Navitas Capital, believes that despite the financial crisis sweeping the globe, Obama will still play a pivotal role in the expansion of renewable energy. ‘While President-elect Barack Obama is poised to inherit a ton of problems across every dimension of his presidency, we look for the Obama administration to become a strong advocate for a wide array of clean technologies.
‘As a result of policy at the federal level, we believe that Obama sees an enormous opportunity to simultaneously stimulate the economy and improve the environment for future generations,’ he added.
Obama’s policies, however, do raise the question as to whether a critical change can really be implemented and whether the legacy of the past eight years of a Bush presidency can be significantly altered.
Amidst a flurry of economic woes, some have argued that it would be a mistake to place climate change at the top of the agenda in a time of financial difficulty and instability. However, many in the industry feel that the economic downturn will have little long-term effect on renewable energy and clean technologies, reinforcing the profile of this sector as a long-term prospect.
Another challenge facing Obama is that the US must acknowledge that it requires the support of emerging countries such as India and China if it is to make a significant dent in the global carbon footprint.
The Kyoto Protocol calls for developed countries to slash their emissions by five per cent by 2012, yet scientific research suggests that emissions requires an 80 per cent reduction by then if climate change is to be significantly tackled. With even Kyoto’s requirements looking a daunting prospect, Obama faces a stern challenge.
Indeed, Obama himself recognises that the US alone cannot solve this pressing concern. While he acknowledged that it was time for the US to set the precedent, he added that countries such as China and Brazil would have to follow suit with their own binding commitments. To that end, Obama, alongside Vice President-elect Joe Biden, has pledged to re-engage with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and bring all the major emitting nations together to develop effective emissions reductions efforts.
With the US known for its unashamedly consumer lifestyle, Obama understands only too well how crucial it is to tackle the issue of energy consumption if the new administration is to show a deep commitment to change. To this end, fuel economy standards are set to increase by four per cent each year while one million hybrid cars are expected on the road by 2015.
The next president expects ten per cent of all electricity to be derived from renewable sources by 2012. With Barack Obama yet to step into the White House, we can only speculate whether his goals will be realised. It remains to be seen whether the US can lead the way in the world’s efforts to tackle climate change.

We are at the dawn of a solar revolution in the United States. Every aspect of the solar industry is experiencing explosive growth. Triple digit expansion in solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing, to the need for solar sales associates, to the huge demand for solar system installers is emerging everywhere. Opportunities abound.
Due to this commitment, the Department of Energy will be more than willing to give out grants for something like a home-based, solar energy business. Steven Chu, the new Secretary of Energy has pledged to make the Department of Energy’s services more available to the common person. This means that anymore who want to run a business from home promoting the use of solar energy should be able to work their way through the bureaucracy well.
The change in attitude related to renewable, solar energy just offers way more options to a person, who may have lost their job during this economic downturn, to get a let up and start their own, work from home business.
Most of the grants and funding work is done through the Office of Science Grants and Contracts Division. The Office of Science Contracts would make an assessment on whether or not the work from home solar energy business would be viable enough to be worthy of a government subsidy. The DOE has launched what they call the Solar America Initiative. Many new renewable energy initiatives will establish many new forms of energy all from off grid places by twenty-fifteen.
There are other options and ways to start your own solar energy business besides getting the whole business operation up and running by yourself. You can look for other established or emerging companies that have inexpensive ways to become affiliated with them. To be a sales associate in most organizations doesn’t take a lot of work. You may need to pass a test to show you are qualified and know a little about solar energy but that is usually it.
You do not need to be a college graduate or a seasoned sales executive. More often than not, a person with passion and drive can really make a difference. There are opportunities in the renewable energy industry for those who believe in solar power and wish to promote alternate ways to help the U.S. produce electricity.
If you are required to pay a fee to become involved in a business opportunity, it may mean something is fishy. Good business opportunities, especially targeting the home-based entrepreneur, show not fees or additional costs to join. You should be on the lookout if they do. A company, offering a viable business opportunity, will not charge an upfront fee or ask you to purchase products. The primary objective is about creating a team, a collective of passionate people all doing good by referring U.S. homeowners to exciting aspects of renting a solar energy system for their home.
Obviously the idea of a home based solar energy business that promotes the renting of a solar system versus having to buy one is a super way to offer renewable energy and one great idea that will get us all closer to moving off the grid for good.
A new form of environmental entrepreneur or a green collar worker, was much talked about in the recently election. A green collar job would revive the solar manufacturing base in this country and provide opportunity to people who otherwise might not be able to make a good living or who may have recently lost a job. A small business is the lifeblood of the economy for many communities so when a green collar job is a part of a small business, it is a winning combination.
The exciting aspect of solar energy is the potential for growth. The renewable energy industry is still in its infancy. With less than 2.3 percent total market penetration into the residential market, the renewable energy industry has a huge market to tap into. What’s more, solar power makes up three fifths of a percent of the total renewable share, and yet, solar power has the greatest potential of all renewable types for rapid, exponential growth.
There are also several websites that promote the idea of home based renewable energy. Many of these websites have connections to private equity and venture capital firms who would consider investing in a solar energy company, but the truth is that there is such a calling for something innovative like a home based solar company that large upfront investments are not necessary in many ways.
Home based solar energy companies would fit nicely in the scheme of the President’s Advanced Energy Initiative. Dr. Chu, mentioned a couple of times previously, advocates the partnership of private and public sectors as it relates to the required growth of solar.
As a professor at Stanford, Chu has written on the benefits of renewable energy for home usage and how it will help ease our way off fossil fuels. Chu has called for a revolution in alternative fuels and he says there is no better time than now to confront challenges like global warming. Without a doubt, the next few years will provide a bounty of opportunities to build a work from home, solar energy business.

The new buzzword in the economy is green jobs
. The Obama administration envisions green collar jobs to boost the lagging economy. The industrial leaders of the renewable energy sector promote green collar jobs as the way towards increasing public awareness of the need for environmental protection while increasing the prospects for their bottom line. The environmentalists want green collar jobs to be more pervasive for the sake of Mother Earth.
Green Money
The better news for the Joes and Janes on the street is that green collar jobs mean green dollars on their pockets. Pundits estimate that as many as 185,000 jobs can be generated by the end of 2010 and that figure is for the wind sector alone!
In the solar energy sector, the numbers are more impressive with 7 million jobs created by the year 2030. Of course, it may seem way off into the future but that future starts its roll today. Thus, professionals and skilled workers are advised to hone their skills for green jobs as early as possible.
Efforts along this line will be well rewarded. Many online pay scale sites have discovered in surveys that solar and wind energy workers earn more than their counterparts with similar skills in other industries. Even entry level green energy jobs like solar power installer and wind turbine fabricator can earn at least $36,100 per year, depending on the skills, expertise and experience of the individual as well as the location of the projects.
Another good thing about green jobs aside from the better pay is the upward mobility possible. Workers can move up the ranks with experience, seniority and advanced training depending on company policy.
Of course, higher education in colleges as well as professional licenses matter with green energy jobs but not as much as one expected them to since even high school graduates can enter the workforce. More often than not, one should have transferable skills that can be re-purposed as well as the right training for the solar and wind energy sectors.
Green Earth
Green collar jobs also benefit the Earth as well as the pockets of its human inhabitants. Keep in mind that the definition of green collar jobs almost always center on the positive impact, either direct or indirect, of the activities involved on the Earth itself.
Thus, you will read of definitions whereby green collar jobs should generate and use renewable energy, conserve natural resources, minimize waste and use of hazardous materials, promote biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem and lessen greenhouse gas emissions, to name a few goals. Indeed, green jobs are green precisely because these make for a greener Earth in more ways than one.
However, it cannot be overemphasized that gaining employable access to the green sector is not as easy as it seems. Of course, one can always directly apply to companies dealing in renewable energy particularly solar and wind power, which are the largest and fastest-growing niches in the industry, but it is always better to have previous training.
Thus, we strongly suggest going back to school for training in either niches. You will only spend a few months or years earning your certification and/or associate’s degree but the rewards will be for the long-term. This way, green jobs are yours for the taking, thanks to your educational advantage.
