Indoor Air Pollution – Causes, Effects and Controls

Indoor air pollution refers to the presence of gaseous and particulate contaminants in the indoor air environment. Contamination of indoor air is particularly hazardous because people spend about 65 to 95 percent of their lives indoors and exposure to some of the contaminants may cause serious health problems. However, for taking effective control measures, it is necessary to identify the sources of air pollutants.

Sources of Indoor Air Pollution

Both natural and man-made sources can deteriorate indoor air quality. Natural sources include soils and water that release radon decay products, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fungi. In addition, some animal pets also release certain allergens affecting sensitive individuals. Other than natural sources, many human actions cause emissions of dangerous air pollutants into the indoor environment.

Human-produced air contaminants originate from various types of appliances, combustion sources such as vehicle engines, wood burning and unvented space heating using gas and kerosene. Building materials are also a significant source of particulates in air. Some pollutants are generated by individual behavior, such as tobacco smoking and through use of consumer products.

Effects of Indoor Air pollution

Effects of poor indoor air quality upon humans and animals are dependent upon exposure and the concentration of pollutants. Effects experienced by humans include respiratory illness, decreased lung function and other physiological changes. Particulate matter and formaldehyde cause irritation of eyes and produce changes in pulmonary function. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, nitrates and methylene chlorides affect heart and brain by causing changes in carboxy hemoglobin.

Lead has been identified to have neurological effects, especially in infants and children. Benzene has been shown to produce a form of leukemia while both radon and asbestos have been proven to cause lung cancer in humans. Studies of effects on animals have shown results similar to those found in humans.

Indoor air contamination can also have corrosive effects on materials. Outdoor pollutants can infiltrate and interact with indoor pollutants to generate new substances that are detrimental to materials; an example is outdoor ozone interacting with indoor volatile organic compounds to produce corrosive compounds affecting electronic equipment. Extensive damage to rubber, paint and dyes, leather and textiles, and ceramics has been demonstrated by indoor air pollutants.

Indoor Air Pollution Control

The first and foremost control measure on indoor air contamination is source removal including water, plants, pets, and certain building materials. Another effective consideration is reduction in source emissions through manufacturing processes, changes in building materials, prevention of water leakage, and source usage recommendations. Similarly, reduction of exposure to humans can be achieved using standard direct methods such as filtration and cleaning, as well as good building and source design.

Government agencies can monitor product manufacturing, promote ventilation in workplaces, use public health education to help people minimize risks and encourage safe indoor air, and enforce regulations (such as banning tobacco smoking in workplaces and public buildings). Finally, individuals can limit their exposures, especially in residences, by several measures, including avoidance of sources that degrade the quality of indoor air.

Clean Indoor Air

The quality of indoor air is badly affected by addition of contaminants from both natural and human-caused sources. Many of these contaminants such as VOCs are harmful for human health and may cause terrible ailments. Some of the pollutants in indoor air are detrimental to objects made of rubber, ceramics and metals and result in material losses. The indoor air pollution can be controlled by removing sources, reducing emissions and minimizing exposures to humans and materials. Both Government regulations and public education are vital for effective results.

Both batteries together are 12 volts at 2800 amp hours. That is the equivalent to 28 golf cart batteries. That’s $2,000 – $3,000 worth of golf cart batteries. Or about $8,000 in forklift batteries if they are purchased new.

Q: Are the blades really free, and how long does it really take to carve them?
A: Yep, the windmill blades are free except for the work you put into them. My first set took about 3 hours because I didn’t know what I was doing. Now I can carve 3 windmill blades in about an hour.

Getting Rid of Those Disgusting Pests – Cockroaches

The Phoenix, Glendale and surrounding areas of Arizona can have any number of cockroach species infest their homes, including the German cockroach, brownbanded cockroach, American cockroach and the oriental cockroach. We also have other cockroach species that will occasionally enter buildings but become only a temporary nuisance.

Many people are disqusted and squeamish by the simple presence of cockroaches an immediately grab the phone to call a Phoenix exterminator. Which is a smart thing to do as cockroaches are are also a big public health problem. Cockroaches can contaminate food and eating utensils and can carry human pathogens, such as Salmonella and E.Coli, which can result in human diseases, such as food poisoning or diarrhea. Cockroach infestations can also produce surface stains and foul odors from their saliva, cast skins and feces, which can be a source of allergens and can irritate allergies and asthma in people, especially children.

It is important to make the right identification to ensure a proper control of the pest in question as there are many insects that look similar, in fact it can be difficult because the young immature cockroaches can resemble the adults of other species, some can have wings while others are wingless at different stages of their life cycles.

Always take preventative measures because it can be common to carry home cockroaches in bags, boxes and even luggage. Corrugated cardboard boxes are a very susceptible source of an infestation. Always inspect containers that are brought into your home carefully for the presence of cockroaches or their egg capsules, especially if they are brought in from locations known to be infested with cockroaches.

Sanitation is key to reducing cockroach infestations. Roaches need water and food to live and you can minimize an existing infestation when improving sanitation.

    - Do not leave food out – utilize insect- proof containers and store food in a refrigerator.
    - Do not leave pet food and water out overnight.
    - Wash dishes when meals are over
    - Wash all counter tops , sinks and tables with soapy water.
    - Sweep or vacuum all cracks and crevices to remove all food and debris.
    - Take garbage out daily. Always use closed plastic containers or bags.
    - Repair any leaky water pipes or faucets.
    - Recycle cans and bottles on a regular basis; wash and clean containers that hold recycling items.
    - Increase ventilation where condensation is a problem.
    - Wash garbage cans, and areas where kept. Keep Dry.
    Control

We always recommend you call Invader Pest Management for a professional solution to your pest problems. However if you choose the “Do it yourself” plan, please take Caution: Read all label directions carefully before buying insecticides and again before you apply them. Always follow all label directions completely. The label is the final authority for use of the product. Do not use aerosol foggers and bombs. These products do a poor job of delivering insecticides to the cracks and crevices where cockroaches hide while increasing the exposure of pesticides to people and pets.

Unfortunately, Cockroaches are particularly challenging to control in multi-unit dwellings, such as apartment buildings. It is usually necessary to treat the units that are known to be infested as well as all adjacent units, and while relief for your apartment is slow, if you follow some of the steps above you can reduce the cockroach traffic from adjacent units if your unit is less desirable because it lacks food and harborage that roaches love. Cockroach control in multiple unit buildings usually requires the services of an experienced pest management service and you should always contact your property manager, even before you begin your own treatments.

How Pure is Distilled Water Do You Want To Know the Truth and a Pure Water Solution You Can Use

How pure is distilled water you may ask? Is it a great pure water solution that you can use to keep your family healthy? It is definitely important that you find out the real truth behind this type of water.

First you must understand that tap water is not a good choice for you to drink. It goes on a long journey before it gets to your home, going through reservoirs that often are prone to infection, going through pipes that are rusty and old, and this all happens before it even gets to your home.

There are so many ways that your water can get contaminated along the way. In fact, most tap water has many different contaminants, which means that you are putting them in your body if you are drinking the tap water.

Just a few of the contaminants that are pretty common include viruses, feces, bacteria, chlorine, prescription drugs, and many others. Yes, this is all in your water. It is definitely not something you enjoy thinking about. When you drink this water, it can result in a variety of health problems, which is why it is so important that you come up with a solution for pure and safe water for your home.

So, how pure is distilled water and is it a pure water solution that is effective? Well, these distillers help to get rid of the contaminants that are found in water. However, there is one problem. The important minerals that you need in your water are also removed. Essential minerals are important, such as magnesium and calcium, but distilling the water will eliminate these important minerals that you need.

How pure is distilled water? Well, it is pure. Almost too pure in reality. You see, the body relies on the minerals that are in natural water. Without those important minerals, you can end up with deficiencies that can cause you a variety of health problems as well. So, distilled water is really not the best choice for you when trying to find a solution for your water problems.

Now that you know that distilled water is not the best choice, you may be wondering what a good pure water solution really is. Well, let me show you the truth about this. Water filters and purifiers are a much better option. The highest quality filtration systems are designed to remove contaminants while leaving in the important minerals that your body needs.

Instead of going to distilled water to avoid the problems with tap water, going with a home filtration system is a much better option. Instead of asking how pure is distilled water, look further to filtered water. This way all those important minerals for your body are still included but you do not have to worry about the dangerous contaminants that are so prevalent in tap water today.

And, to help you avoid water related health issues, I invite you to take a look at a pure water solution that will prove highly effective in protecting your entire family’s well being. You would get more information when you visit http://www.safefilteredwater.com/

Green Cleaning Chemicals Remove HVAC Odors without Hazardous Compounds

WOBURN, MA, U.S.A. — May 7, 2010 — Daimer Industries Inc.®, a noted global source for green cleaning formulas, green cleaning chemicals and ozone-safe green cleaners, has announced the availability of Eco-Green® AC & Heater Deodorizer. This odor-removing formula was created for public works organizations charged with maintaining industrial heating and air conditioning units.

“AC & Heater Deodorizer kills odors at their source and prevents them from coming back,” said Daimer.com municipal products spokesperson Matthew Baratta. “The formula contains no hazardous aerosols or other noxious compounds.”

    Green Cleaners Remove Odors

AC & Heater Deodorizer is one of Daimer®’s HVAC maintenance products for professionals in public works. The green cleaning chemicals included in this deodorizer are all-natural — the product contains no volatile organic compounds, ozone-affecting chemicals, or synthetic additives. The biodegradable deodorizer breaks down into safe components sooner than other non-green products — often in as few as thirty days. Eco Green cleaning chemicals for public works register zeros in NFPA hazard scores.

AC & Heater Deodorizer disperse in the air and destroy the carbon bonds that hold together odor-causing substances. As a result, the chemical action prevents these substances from re-adhering to HVAC surfaces.

    Choose the Organic Version

Is natural food always made from natural ingredients? The answer is, not necessarily. “Natural” could mean just about anything. Going with an organic diet is the best way to assure yourself that you are getting the most out of every bite. Plenty of people are starting to hop on the organic bandwagon and many of us need to cut corners here and there to save a little money so we rationalize, assuming that a “natural” version of the food we like will be the next best thing.

Those of you who have decided to dedicate yourselves to a vegan diet or folks who simply want to cut down on their meat intake may seek meals containing meat substitutes because advertisements state that it’s good for you. Why shouldn’t you eat it? Everyone says it’s healthy and “natural” and it contains soy that is taken from a bean that is high in protein.

I listed a few of these foods (that are not organic) that many people think are healthy alternatives. The reality is that these products appear to be healthy but if you decode the ingredients you might be surprised. The following consists of two products that are widely used but aren’t as healthy as they seem. You can also take me up on the recipe I created as well as the one I found online that might prove to be healthier alternatives.

    Veggie Burgers:

What looks to be a healthy alternative to meat could actually contain gasoline. The soybeans used in most veggie burgers may have been soaking in hexane before the burgers were made. The hexane separates the oil from the protein of the soybean. You will have an idea of whether or not your veggie burger is actually a gassy patty if it contains one or more of the following: soy protein concentrate, soy protein isolate and/or texturized vegetable protein. …

Be a responsible citizen Use eco friendly products

The environment friendly products and materials are increasingly being used these days as it helps in reducing global warming & pollution. It is the responsibility of each & every individual to contribute towards making the environment clean & healthy. Hence, make your contribution by going green and using eco friendly products for building or renovating your home.

One must make use of natural stones, which can be used for building both, the interiors as well as the exteriors of the house. Marble and graphite are good examples of natural stones that are widely used for building homes; these are durable and require minimal maintenance. Moreover, these stones provide an elegant outlook and are highly reasonable when it comes to price.

You can also paint your roof in white or light colors. Not only will this look elegant, but will also help in reflecting back the harmful radiation; this is also good alternative to keep your house cool the natural way. The US Secretary of Energy and a Nobel prize-winning scientist Steven Chu stated that the green house effect can be minimized by making a building reflective where the sunlight gets bounced back into space.

While constructing or refurbishing your home, make use of eco friendly products such as environment friendly flooring material. Recently, these eco friendly products have become quite a rage since these are attractive, durable as well as affordable. Moreover, you have so many options to select from, such as bamboo which gives a wood like effect. Other options include cork flooring, linoleum flooring, stone flooring, ceramic or glass tiles. All these are eye catching options, come in variety of colors and are sturdy as well as long lasting. Apart from this, you can use radiant electric floor heating systems, based on the principle of thermal heat radiation. This is more beneficial than using other heating options, such as electric base board heat, gas furnaces, wood and boilers. Electric floor heating systems consume less energy and prove to be highly economical.

Moreover, you can use eco friendly cleaning solutions which do not contain harsh and harmful chemicals. The harmful chemicals present in traditional cleaning solutions can cause breathlessness, dizziness and uneasiness along with having long term side effects such as cancer. Apart from this, chemicals such as chlorine bleach, ammonia, sodium hydroxide and phosphates found in traditional cleaning solutions are harmful to the environment. Hence, make use of eco friendly cleaning solutions, made up of biodegradable constituents, with a neutral pH (7) as for cleaning your home.

The eco friendly products are not only beneficial for humans but also for the environment and if each one of us realizes the significance of these products, our planet will definitely become a cleaner place to live. Therefore, for your own benefit and for the benefit of mankind use eco friendly products for your home.

    Eco-Parenting

Arabella Greatorex, owner of The Natural Nursery, reports on the rapidly rising demand for natural, environmentally friendly and ethically sound parenting products and highlights some of the concerns that have fuelled these demands.

    Organic Food

There has been much media debate around the promotion of heavily processed foods to children, part of a long standing concern about the quality of food on offer in the UK. While some say the jury is still out on issues such as pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables, it is worth noting that only 30 additives are allowed in organic food, compared to over 300 in non-organic. Specifically, organic food bans the use of tartrazine (linked to hyperactivity in children) and GM ingredients.

The Soil Association reports that sales in organic food grew by 10% last year overall and purchases from farm shops and box schemes by a whopping 16%. This means that over 75% of households bought some organic food during 2004.

Organic baby and toddler foods now account for nearly half of total baby foods in the UK, with its market share growing rapidly, highlighting the level of concern felt by parents, and is a trend that looks set to continue.

    Cloth Nappies

Modern cloth nappies bear no resemblance to the old-fashioned terry squares you probably wore as a child. They are cheaper and more hygienic to use than their disposable counterparts and parents are fast cottoning on to this. Ten years ago, only 2% of parents used cloth nappies; that figure has now grown to over 15% and is rising steadily.

Despite this growth in cloth nappy use, Bristol City Council still spends around £500,000 each year dealing with disposable nappies. Conventional disposable nappies can contain up to 200 chemicals and some estimates say they will take over 200 years to decompose.

The alternative is to use cloth nappies, which are now available in a wide range of shapes and sizes and can be just as easy to use as disposables. You can choose from so soft organic terry or a natural eco-look or funky fleece prints or even retro patterns to really make a statement. They can be flat, shaped or stuffed, depending upon your child’s personal needs and you will find other “clothies” are more than happy to help you decide which nappy is right for you.

They could help you save money as well; the Women’s Environmental Network estimate that savings will be around £500 for the first child and more for subsequent children, even taking into account the cost of home laundering.

    Chemical Free Toiletries

Your skin will absorb around 60% of products applied to it and Green People estimates that the average woman will absorb about 2kg of chemicals through toiletries and cosmetics over one year, up to 75,000 different chemicals! We all know how sensitive a baby’s skin is and rates of eczema are rising fast with almost a third of babies now suffering from it.

Many people believe that the chemicals in the lotions and potions that we use are to blame. Even some so called “natural” products contain a range of chemicals that are believed to cause or exacerbate skin conditions or be carcinogenic, even if they are originally plant derived. Worryingly, a product needs to contain only 1% natural ingredients to be legally labelled “natural”.

Natural, organic and chemical free toiletries are no longer the preserve of the health food shop but are widely available on the high street or from specialist internet companies. The Soil Association estimate that there will be a 20% increase in the number of licensed organic manufacturers this year, reflecting the huge surge in demand, especially amongst families with young children.

    Fair trade

When you are buying clothes or toys for your baby, international trade may seem like a remote issue but by choosing carefully, you could make all the difference to someone else’s life. Farmers in the developing world are ill-equipped to cope with dramatic changes in commodity prices, which are caused by factors outside the control of the individuals most concerned.

Parents are being offered an increasing range of fairly or ethically traded products, including clothes, shoes, toys, toiletries and nappies. Sales of “Fairtrade” marked goods are now well over £100m per year in the UK alone, up 46% on last year and we eat a third of a million fair trade bananas every DAY!

    The growth in organic cotton

Most people assume that as cotton is a natural product, it is produced naturally, unfortunately, this is not the case. Around 150 grams of hazardous chemical pesticides will be used to grow enough cotton to make one t-shirt. The cotton farming industry accounts for about 1/4 of the world’s insecticide use as well as huge amounts of fertilisers that can end up in the water system and food chain.

The World Health Organisation estimates that 20,000 people die every year in developing countries as a result of poisoning from pesticides used on non-organic cotton. Worryingly, much of the world’s cotton production comes from genetically modified crops: over 2/3rds of China’s cotton crop is GM.

Luckily, more and more organic textiles are now available and there has been an 80% increase in the worldwide production of organic cotton in the last 2 years, with sales in the UK alone now worth over £20m from almost zero a couple of years ago. You can now buy organic clothes, bedding, towels, sheepskins and nappies from a range of suppliers – even good old Marks and Spencer sell a range of organic cotton yoga clothes.

Katharine Hamnett, fashion designer, says: “This is part of a rapidly growing trend reflecting increasing consumer awareness and concern over global issues to do with the impact of pesticides, herbicides, dioxins and toxic chemicals used in textiles, on the environment and human heath. The good news is that this shows people are actually looking for positive alternatives.”

    And for the daddies

The Ecologist Magazine recently studied the contents of a can of shaving gel and found it to contain “several skin irritants, four potential carcinogens, three central nervous system poisons and two reproductive toxins” – and all this before breakfast!

Arabella Greatorex is the owner of http://www.naturalnursery.co.uk, an online store selling organic and fairly traded products for families including organic clothing and nappies, fairly traded toys and natural toiletries.

Are There Hidden Health Hazards In Your Baby’s Nursery?

Would you expose your newborn baby to formaldehyde, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and pesticides? Of course not! Even if you were told, it shouldn’t affect your baby’s health, you wouldn’t want to take that chance. Yet one of the first things we do as expectant parents is to prepare a nursery for our baby. We paint, buy a crib, mattress, and bedding and perhaps even install new carpeting in the room that our baby will spend the majority of their first year.

Did you know that these products contain formaldehyde, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, pesticide residues and other chemicals that could affect your baby’s health and development?

It’s bad enough that we expose ourselves to these chemicals but it is even worse for our children. Babies are more susceptible to the effects of toxins than adults for several reasons. The most obvious reason is that babies are much smaller and therefore have a lower tolerance to toxins. Babies are also developing very rapidly and any chemical that interferes with the growth and development process is going to have a greater effect on them as compared to an adult. Babies also take in more air than adults in relation to their body size which means they are breathing in more toxins than an adult. Finally, many toxic gasses commonly found in the home are heavier than air and settle near the floor where children play.
There are many measures we can take as parents to make our home a more natural, safer place to raise healthy children. Listed below are the sources of many common household toxins and what you can do to eliminate or reduce the risk of exposure for your baby and yourself.

    Flame Retardants

Flame retardants are probably one of the first toxins your baby will encounter in the home. Even though it may seem like you never get any sleep with a newborn in the house, babies actually do a lot of sleeping–about 60% of their first year! That is a lot of time to spend in close contact with a mattress treated with flame retardants called PBDEs. Several animal studies have found that PBDEs build up in the body over time and exposure during critical growth periods may cause irreversible reproductive and nervous system damage(1). PBDEs are chemically similar to PCBs which were banned in 1976 after they were found to cause cancer and affect the immune, reproductive, nervous and endocrine system in animals(2). PBDEs are already banned in Europe but unfortunately they are still widely used in the US. An organic crib mattress is essential for a healthy nursery. Consider purchasing a mattress made with organic cotton or latex and wool. The wool not only acts to regulate temperature, but is also naturally fire retardant. An organic cotton and wool crib mattress will meet the same government standards for flammability as a chemically treated mattress but is a much more natural option and avoids any potential risks of PBDEs.

    Pesticides

Most crib bedding is made with cotton, the second most heavily pesticide treated crop in the world. Of the top nine pesticides used in cotton farming, five have been shown to cause cancer and are rated among the most dangerous by the Environmental Protection Agency. Even more chemicals are added during the process to convert the raw cotton into cloth. Because your baby will spend so much time sleeping, it makes sense that their crib bedding be free from any pesticide residue or chemical contaminants. When shopping for crib bedding, opt for those made with organic cotton, grown without the use of pesticides. Children also love to put their toys in their mouth so consider purchasing stuffed animals made from organic cotton, especially when babies are teething.

Another source of pesticide exposure is from treating our homes and yards. Research indicates that children exposed to higher levels of pesticides had seven times the risk of developing childhood Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma(3). As an alternative to conventional pesticides, consider using cornmeal in the yard to prevent weed seeds from germinating (available in many garden shops and online). There are several good books written on the subject of natural gardening that provide natural solutions to all kinds of lawn and garden problems. My personal favorites are books by Jerry Baker who has literally thousands of tips and tricks. Inside the home, pesticides made from orange peel are safe, natural and very effective at killing many common pests.

    Paint

Most paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOC) that off gas into the air long after the paint has dried. That wet paint smell is actually due to the VOCs in the paint evaporating into the air. Healthier paint alternatives would be a natural paint, zero VOC paint or a low VOC paint. Natural paints are the healthiest choice. They are made form natural plant based compounds and have almost no smell. Zero VOC paints are also a safe choice, are very easy to work with, have very little or no odor and are widely available and affordable. By law, paint with 5 grams per liter VOC or less may be called a zero VOC paint. Tinting the paint may add a small amount of VOC but usually not exceeding 10 grams per liter VOC which is still very low. To minimize the amount of VOCs added by tint, choose a pastel or light color for your baby’s nursery. These colors are also very soothing and will help you baby to relax and fall asleep faster. The VOC content for low VOC paint varies and is usually written on the label. These paints will often have an odor at least until dry. Regardless of what type of paint you are using, if you are pregnant, it is best to let someone else do the painting if possible or at least choose safe paint and make sure there is adequate ventilation.

Lead is another consideration when discussing paint toxins. If your home was built before 1978, it may have been painted with a lead based paint. Because lead can cause developmental problems in children, any chipped paint where it could be ingested poses a health risk. Pregnant women should also be careful to avoid areas where anything that may contain lead based paint is being sanded or refinished.

Household Cleaners and Baby Bath Items

Most household cleaners are toxic chemicals. Consider using cleaners that are made from plant and vegetable based ingredients and essential oils for fragrance. Rather than using a synthetic cleaner on tile or linoleum flooring where a child will crawl and play, use a stream cleaner which will disinfect without the use of chemicals.

While there are many bath soaps and shampoos on the market made especially for baby, often these are just milder versions of the adult formula. Read the labels and ask yourself if you would want those ingredients (Yes…even the ones you can’t pronounce) inside your baby’s body. The skin acts as a barrier for some chemicals however many are absorbed through the skin, a process which is aided by the warmth and moisture while bathing. Natural soaps, lotions and oils are always the best choice for your baby.

    Carpeting

Traditional carpeting and the adhesives sometimes used in its installation can be a toxic nightmare. Carpeting contains too many VOCs to name them all but include neurotoxins like toluene and xylene and carcinogens such as benzene and formaldehyde which may off gas into the air for years. Older carpet contains years of accumulated dust and dirt that may contribute to the development of asthma. Pesticides tracked indoors from shoes also build up in carpeting over time. There are many other flooring options besides carpeting that are now coming into mainstream design. Cork flooring is beautiful, soft and environmentally friendly. Bamboo is another beautiful environmentally friendly option. Just make sure that the manufacturer and the installer do not use any glues containing formaldehyde. Natural fiber area rugs are another option which can be laid on cork, bamboo or tile floors to define a space or to give your baby a soft spot to land while learning to walk. Some people just love the look and warmth of wall to wall carpeting and for those there is low VOC carpeting made from recycled plastic which is even more durable an stain resistant than traditional carpeting.

    Indoor Air Pollution

The toxins from the sources above and more fill the air in our homes. We hear reports about smog and air pollution but according to the EPA, indoor air pollution may be 3-5 times worse than the air we breathe outdoors. Chemicals released into the air build up and can not escape especially in newer homes which are constructed to be airtight and more energy efficient. When the weather cooperates we can open the windows to air out the house but when it is cold or when the air conditioner is running there is little air exchange between indoors and out. In families with toddlers, leaving the windows open may pose a safety hazard. So what can we do? One of the least expenses things we can do is to bring some plants into our home which are able to remove chemicals from the air, acting as a purifier. Not all plants are created equal in this respect. NASA has tested and ranked twelve species of plants to determine the best at removing trichloroethylene, benzene and formaldehyde from the air. Here is what they found:

    • Gerbera daisy, Dracaena Marginata, Peace lily (Spathiphyllum), Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’ and Bamboo palm were the five most effective plants in eliminating trichloroethylene.
    • Gerbera Daisy, pot Mum, Peace lily, Bamboo palm, Dracaena Warneckei, English ivy and Mother-in-law’s tongue are the best houseplants for removing benzene.
    • Bamboo palm, Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’, Mother-in-law’s tongue, Dracaena Marginata, Peace lily, green Spider plant, and golden pothos are the top plants for removing formaldehyde.

Just remember to give your Gerbera daisy a lot of sun! Based on this study, an 1800 square foot home would need between 15-20 plants to clean the air. I love plants and my home is full of them. I think they create a warm and inviting atmosphere but not everyone wants to feel like they are living in a jungle. In addition, some people have allergies which prohibit them from filling their home with plants. For those people and as an extra layer of protection, consider an air purifier, especially if any renovation was done to prepare your baby’s nursery.

There are several different types of air purifiers available. The best will have HEPA or HEGA filtration and will also remove airborne gasses. Beware of air purifiers that contain ionizers as they may release ozone into the air which is harmful to lung tissue, especially for those with asthma. Purifiers are available in a wide range of prices but also consider how much it will cost to operate in terms of electricity and replacement filters. Consider how noisy a unit is while running. If you can’t leave it run, an air purifier will not serve its purpose.

    Scary Statistics

While it is impossible to point a finger at one particular chemical, over the last few decades, cancer and asthma rates have increased, learning disabilities have increased 191% between 1977 and 1994, autism rates have skyrocketed 556% over the last ten years nationwide(4) and the rate of premature births is up 29% since 1981(5). One thing we do know is that as a nation, our children are getting sicker.

Children learn values through their parent’s actions. By making healthy decisions for your baby now, you are teaching them to make healthy decisions for themselves later in life. As parents, we want only the best for our children. Why take chances with your baby’s health by purchasing products that contain harmful chemicals when there are healthy alternatives available?

Cynthia Smith began her mission to promote healthy home environments during the adoption of her first child. Non-Toxic Living Attitude : Toxins Vs. Toxicants

Non-toxic living is a certain mental disposition with regard to poisonous substances. Toxic substances are known as toxins and toxicants. In order to diminish harmful effect of toxins and toxicants, it is imperative that we identify what they are first.

By definition, a toxin is a poisonous substance produced by living cell or organisms…toxins can be small molecules, peptides, or proteins that are capable of causing disease…Science often doesn’t give us a straight answer what is healthy and what is not. According to Stedman’s Medical Dictionary 24th Ed., “Toxins are relatively complex antigenic molecules, and the chemical compositions are usually not precisely known“.

For a toxic substance not produced by living organisms, the more appropriate term is toxicant. A toxicant is a chemical compound that has a harmful effect on organisms. Toxicants are typically introduced into the environment by human activity.

Both toxins and toxicants can produce an adverse response in a biological system, seriously injuring structure or function, or resulting in death. Very important survival aspect of humanity is decreasing the potential of causing acute or chronic adverse effects in animals, plants, or people. We have to develop our non-toxic living attitude which expands our consciousness wider. Non-toxic living attitude is based on natural tendency of human mind to choose vitality instead of decay. We can increase its potential and regulate our daily activities by conscious preference, not only by survival instincts.

The fashion trends of green living and organic products are not always relevant to non-toxic living attitude. Some news and discoveries sound not attractive at all. Organic apples contain acids which dissolve teeth enamel twice faster, organic vegetables loose all essential vitamins during cooking process, row eating cause stomach disease, wearing wool clothing often provokes allergic reaction and skin irritation, disgusting sprays produce better cosmetic effects, organic compost contains heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,pharmaceuticals,steroids,flame-retardants,bacteria,fungi,parasites and viruses.

We can’t completely remove toxins and toxicants from our lives as a source of a problem, but we can eliminate and eventually eradicate the problem itself by questioning our beliefs and values and make right choices for ourselves and our families and pets.

Ammonia, Chlorine Bleach, Phosphates and Sodium Hydroxide are some of the chemicals that are found in cleaning solutions. These chemicals are not only harmful to humans, but cause severe damage to the environment as well. It is for this reason that you are recommended to use eco friendly cleaning solutions instead of traditional ones that contain harmful chemicals.

A numbers of eco friendly solutions are available in the market these days; however, it is important to carefully analyze their constituents in order to be sure of their eco friendly nature. A few things that you should consider while selecting an eco friendly cleaning solution include their pH levels, level of solvents and their biodegradable nature. Cleaning solutions that have pH levels of either more than 7 or less than 7 are considered to be highly corrosive; therefore, you should look out for a cleaning solution that has a neutral pH level. Solvents such as PGEs (Propylene Glycol Ethers) and EGEs (Ethylene glycol ethers) are also considered to be harmful and should be avoided in a cleaning solution. Finally, it is important to consider the biodegradable nature of your cleaning solution to ensure that it does not harm the environment.

Eco-friendly, Environmentally friendly flooring, go green, Green cleaning products

Use of eco friendly cleaning solutions will benefit you & your family by reducing the risk of allergies as well as of toxins. Children and the elderly are generally more prone to allergies that are caused by chemicals found in cleaning solutions. Bleaches, phosphates and perfumes found in most cleaning agents are known to cause severe allergies. It is important to realize this correlation between allergies and such chemicals, and to reduce the use of these harmful chemicals by purchasing eco friendly cleaning solutions.

Most of the traditional cleaning solutions contain toxins that can cause severe conditions such as cancer and respiratory problems. Such solutions, when sprayed or applied to the surface, pose a risk of inhalation, and severe medical conditions in the future. In order to ensure that your house stays free of such toxins, an ideal solution is to phase out the use of traditional cleaning solutions and replace them with eco friendly ones.

Not only are eco friendly products safe for humans and for the environment, their eco friendly nature enhances their cleaning capacity. Such solutions contain effective alkaline formula to ensure that they are safe as well as effective to use on all kinds of stones and tiles. With the numerous benefits of green cleaning solutions becoming apparent, more & more people are opting for the green way of cleaning their house. You too can eliminate the source of toxins and allergens in your house by replacing your traditional cleaning solvents with eco friendly ones.

Ph Adjustment With Co2 Injection Improves Wastewater Treatment

    Why control pH with co2?

In wastewater treatment, a pH control system that uses a programmable pH controller and pH probe to proportionally control the flow of carbon dioxide injection decreasing the pH from a basic level to a programmable set point, can substantially streamline any pH adjustment process.

The process of adding carbon dioxide to water using a gas diffuser(s) converts the carbon dioxide to carbonic acid in the water, consuming alkalinity, thereby decreasing the pH. This type of system is very easy to calibrate and can use as little as 120-volts AC, 3 amps, for power. When automated, these systems will also include a pH controller, pH probe, gas regulator, a control panel and can be mounted in a number of ways. CO2 is commonly available in 50 lb, 600 lb and bulk containers.

In a well designed automatic pH control system, all components are neatly housed in a compact enclosure that can either be wall mounted or free standing on a stand. These systems can be scaled to support virtually any gas flow with most not exceeding 500 CFM.

Benefits of CO2 VS. Mineral Acids

    • Non hazardous (documented inventory or manifests)
    • No drum disposal costs
    • No secondary containment needed
    • Minimal EC/TDS addition
    • CO2 operating costs are less than using mineral acids

    Flocculating Agents Help Our Environment

    What is a Flocculating Agent?

Flocculating agents or flocculants are the chemicals or substances that facilitate flocculation or floccing up of suspended solids in liquid, typically associated with wastewater. The resulting floc or wooly mass itself is called flocculent with an “e” however sometimes the terms are used interchangeably for flocculant with an “a”. “Floc” is the common name for the clumped up waste.

There are many types of flocculants ( flocculents) including flocculant agents and flocculant chemicals. You can also use various flocculant aids such as pH adjustment.

    Some common flocculants include:

    • alum flocculant
    • anionic flocculant
    • cationic flocculant
    • chitosan flocculant
    • polyacrylamide flocculant
    • polymer flocculant
    • nalco flocculant

What’s the difference between Coagulants and Flocculants?

Coagulants and flocculants are similar, however, a coagulant aids coagulation, not flocculation. The difference is subtle but distinct. Coagulation is more of a thickener, flocculation forms distinct clumps that settle or float.

So, again, coagulation and flocculation are essentially the same type of process, thickening or clumping. Coagulation is more of a thickening process, whereas flocculation is a clumping together of substances or encapsulation of substances that form flocculent and in wastewater treatment hopefully precipitate out of solution.

Flocculants and coagulants used as wastewater flocculants, and in flocculant water treatment, are designed to do one thing, remove suspended solids from water and wastewater and or facilitate solids removal and subsequent dewatering.

Flocculants, or flocculating agents, are chemicals or compounds that cause flocculation by making suspended particles in liquids clump together forming a wooly lump or floc. Because they are woolly in appearance these clumps are called floc.

Using flocculants that do this so well that many processes such as pretreatment and coagulants are eliminated in your industrial wastewater treatment not only can improve your bottom line but can reduce water loss and create a superior environmentally compliant waste product or leftover solids. This means lower disposal costs and better compliance, better for everyone.

What are the best Flocculating Agent Flocculants?

Flocculants that are based on natural products utilize both positive and negative charges in the flocculant to bind to contaminates in your wastewater. This causes the contaminants to not only floc up but also become encapsulated in the flocculant, effectively making the treated sludge or solids environmentally benign to a large degree, rendering environmental compliance that much easier. Again, much lower disposal cost will result due to less water weight, and more importantly much safer solid waste is produced.

Proper flocculation is a win for industry and the environment. The bottom line: Great flocculants make your wastewater treatment easier. Easier means less costly and more efficient, more reusable water, better environmental compliance, lower disposal costs, all leading to higher profits for you with social responsibility to boot.

    Industrial Ecology and Flocculating Agents

Now more than ever, industrial ecology is finding its way into industry, benefiting everyone, everywhere, for a sustainable society.

How To Get Rid Of Ants Naturally – Stay Ant-Free This Summer

Can anyone really say they like ants?  Is there anyone not interested in how to get rid of ants in your house and garden?  I hate ants.  I particularly hate red ants.  And they don’t much like me either.  I still have scars on my ankles where I ran a power lawn mower over a red ant hill which sprayed the little devils all over my sandals and ankles.

Maybe the only thing worse than ants invading your home are the commercial sprays and liquids available to keep them out.  Yes they can kill the ants but if you’re not careful you can do damage to yourself and your pets as well.  And if you’re using them outside you aren’t doing the ground water any favors either.

There are some practical preventive methods you can do to minimize the attractiveness of your home or garden to the little party crashers.  Ants are looking for food and water.  The idea is to deny them those treats and they will look elsewhere (your neighbor’s house perhaps).  This means that you need to do a number of things.

First, get rid of trash as soon as you create it.  If you have scraps from a meal take them outside and put them in the garbage can.  Keep the garbage can away from the house.  If you are one of those people who keep it in the garage for convenience you are just sending out an invitation for the ants.

In the summertime when the little guys are active, keep fresh fruit refrigerated and not laying out on the counter.  Ants thrive on the sucrose found in fruit.  Any food that you have on the counter should be in tightly sealed containers.  I learned that a metal cake cover does not qualify as a tightly sealed container when I came home from a 2 day trip to find a line of ants running from the sliding glass doors, across the dining room, up a counter wall and into the chocolate cake.

Okay I was really tempted to buy some spray and nuke the little buggers.  But you can make your own magic sauce and do it naturally.  Mix a teaspoon of boric acid with 21/2 ounces of corn syrup and heat until the acid dissolves.  Then using a dropper, put the stuff down on likely points of entry to the house.

If you don’t have boric acid handy, and the wind isn’t blowing real hard, you can achieve the same thing by sprinkling chili powder, paprika or borax on the ant trails.  If you want to take the battle to where they live, boil three quarts of water and pour it down the ant hill.  Hey, its you or them right.

So you don’t have to live with ants and there are natural nonchemical ways to send them on their way.  Enjoy your summer without having to deal with uninvited guests.

The Truth About Environmentally Safe Cleaning Products

The ‘Green’ revolution that has taken over modern advertising in recent years has brought to light a number of products that boast their environmental benefits to both the consumer and the world, but how many of these products are merely an advertising slogan and which actually live up to their boasts?

The question isn’t an easy one to answer and while this article certainly can’t comment on every single one, we’ll give you a general idea on what to look for and what to avoid when it comes to the cleaning products in your home.

In 1960, the federal government passed the Federal Hazardous Substances Labeling Act that basically freed companies from having to disclose any dangerous ingredients in household products unless certain reaction or side effects would immediately be noticed after use. If you think about it, this is a rather sobering fact.

For starters, cleaning products don’t fall under the same government regulations that food products, for example, do. If you purchase a product that is labeled ‘bio-degradable’ or ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘natural,’ these words are, in effect, meaningless. There is no oversight with regard to these labels as there are in foods that claim to be ‘organic,’ for example.

How many products are in your home right now that claim to be natural or biodegradable? What is ‘natural?’ Lead is natural but we’ve learned in recent years that it’s not something we would really want to be around everyday. We certainly wouldn’t want our children to be exposed to lead on a regular basis, would we? But it’s natural. Then there’s the biodegradable label. If you wait long enough, just about every product ever created with degrade.

In recent years, however, there have been new programs develop to combat the misleading and sometimes malicious labeling that occurs within the cleaning product business. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has created the DfE label that it affixes to products that use the safest available ingredients from each category in its products. This doesn’t classify a product as ‘safe,’ however.

The Green Seal, created by the company with the same name, is attached to products that are non-toxic, non-corrosive, free of carcinogens, mutagens, and are truly biodegradable. So when you’re looking for the best cleaning products, look for these labels. Don’t forget to take a closer look at that vacuum cleaner you’re using, either. Many of these new bagless systems boast environmentally safe claims as well.

The best advice is to look closely at the fine print and do your homework.

    Organic Gardening Supply

    By Markus Skupeika

We always want our house to be sparkling clean and smelling fresh, but are you sure about the product that you always buy and utilize day after day? These products may have the potential of having harsh chemicals or toxins that can affect your health. Toxins that may lead to serious health disorders like asthma, allergies, decreasing of sperm counts, birth defects and even metal abnormalities, and the worst part, all kinds of cancers.

People often ask me how or what to do, let me share their questions and my humble answers to all of you

My friend Leona (a very beautiful devoted housewife
) asked me what possible chemicals are there in these commercial products and why are they harmful?

    Here are my answers:

Air sprays may have Phthalates (petroleum-base) and this can disrupt hormones.

Laundry detergents and dishwashers have Chlorine bleach, Sulfuric acid and Trisodium nitrilotriacitate. These chemicals are harmful to our environment and may cause deaths to fishes and our pets too,

Napthas and formaldehyde can be found in your furniture polishers. These are very harmful chemicals and a potential carcinogen (cancer-causing agents)

Harmful waste materials like butyl, cellosive, methylene chloride, petroleum distillates and ether type solvents contaminate air, soil and water,

Another question that you might be thinking is, how can I clean my home without using these products?

You might think it’s impossible but its not, solutions are right there in your kitchen and you can even make your own natural cleaning product yourself. All you need are as follows:

Baking soda – the main ingredient and a perfect all purpose cleaner.

Vinegars – contains natural acids and a good disinfectant, can be used in almost all of cleaning situations like cutting grease, vinegar wipes and kill molds and mildew etc. so many to mention.

Borax – a natural mineral commonly used in cleaning, borax can remove stains and a good enhancer of soaps, it also prevents molds and odors.

Essential oils – can be used as freshener because of its aroma.

Lemon juice – Acidic substance that provides antibacterial and antiseptic for cleaning. Also, lemons can be used as laundry bleach and can also take away bad odors.

Salt – can be used as a cleaning agent by itself or combined with other substances, a paste of salt mixed with vinegars can clean tarnished brass or copper, can also be used to prevent kitchen sink from grease and eliminates odors too. Salt also drives away moths and ants (Natural Pesticides).

Now that you know more about these cleaning aids, you can start making your own cleaning products, it might take a while but it’s worth doing and its fun!

Natural cleaning products benefit us in lots of ways. Simply because it’s inexpensive, effective and it won’t affect our health. There are also natural cleaning products out there in the market that uses real organic materials. If you don’t have time to make your own cleaning products (or your just lazy), you must have this natural cleaning products to avoid further damages to our mother nature and our health,

Breathing with certain kinds of chemicals in your home is really a disturbing matter. So act now and replace your home cleaning products with natural cleaning products.

Natural cleaning products promise a clean healthy living
. Just imagine a green clean environment without any toxics or chemicals. With chemicals out in your minds, you can sleep tight like you’ll never worry before!

Chemicals in Tap Water – Health Risks You Face

    By   Larry L. Taylor

Chemicals in tap water? If you drink tap water that has not been run through a “point-of-use” or home purifier the answer is: YES. So then what health risks do you face? The answers to those questions and more are included here.

    The Chemicals in Tap Water

Chlorine, used for disinfection, is bad for the digestive system, toxic to the respiratory system, irritating to the skin, nose and eyes. It reacts with bacteria in the water, on the skin and household surfaces to form THMs, known carcinogens. If you drink tap water that is chlorinated, you increase your risk of cancer and damage you digestive tract.

Other chemicals in tap water include benzene, Atrazine, alachlor, lindane and TCE, other known carcinogens. VOCs or volatile organic compounds are present in most supplies. Some cause cancer. Others affect the function of different organs, including the thyroid gland. MTBE has been found in some water supplies. While it is not believed to cause cancer, it can cause illness.

If you drink tap water that has not been purified with a device that includes granular carbon and a multi-media block, you may be slowly damaging your health. But, drinking bottled water is not a better option. They are just as likely to be contaminated.

Lead and other Metallic Ions – Health Risks

In addition to chemicals in tap water, lead and other metallic ions have been found in a number of homes around the world. Lead causes brain damage, learning disabilities and behavioral problems.

If you drink tap water contaminated with tiny traces of lead throughout your lifetime, you are more likely to have high blood pressure, heart disease and osteoporosis. Primarily, because lead inhibits the body’s ability to absorb necessary nutrients from the foods that you eat.

Home purifiers must include an ion exchange step to effectively reduce lead. The step also improves taste and mineral content.

    Parasitic Cysts – Health Risks

We have been warned that our supplies may contain cysts and they may even be present in bottled brands. Cryptosporidium and giardia cysts cause symptoms similar to food poisoning. This may be a minor illness, but it can be a major illness, resulting in fatality, in a person with a poorly functioning immune system or in a child, whose immune system is not fully developed.

A submicron particle filter will capture more than 99.99% of all cysts. If you’ve been ill, you should only drink tap water that has been run through this type of system or boil everything that you drink, brush your teeth with or use for washing fruits and vegetables. To avoid illness, the rest of us should take the same precautions.

The best purifiers on the market include of the necessary steps to remove cancer-causing chemicals, chlorine MTBE, lead and cysts. The cost is far below what you would need to pay for enough bottled water to meet your necessary daily requirements.

As you can see, there are many health threats from the common contaminants and chemicals in tap water. Do your research as I did and you will find how to effectively remove chemicals in tap water. Take the necessary steps to protect yourself, today not later.

Green Living Ideas…Save Your Life With Zero Chemicals

    By Admin

    Chemical Free Living for Life

I can remember back when the experts said aerosol cans were ripping a hole in the ozone layer. Many of these cans have been replaced by squirt bottles that seem to stop working, when there is still a quarter of the liquid chemical remaining. The point is, we are still using the chemicals. Recent studies prove those cleaning products are hazardous to our health. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the air we breathe inside our homes could be as much as five times as polluted as the air outside. These cleaning products expose you and your family to chemicals that could be more harmful than the germs they are trying to rid you of. Other studies have shown that the average American will, flush down the toilet, wash down a sink, or place in the garbage, more than 20 gallons of toxic and hazardous chemical products. It is all right to be conscientious about recycling or energy consumption, but think about the potential for affecting the health of people, plants, animals, land and water because of this waste. Believe me when I say, I am not trying to scare, but merely inform. Of the roughly 17,000 chemicals found in common household products, only 3 in 10 have been tested for their effects on human health.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the agency responsible for the safety of consumers, does not require manufacturers to test household cleaning products before they appear on store shelves. So we as the consumer must rely on the label to get any pertinent information about safety and health hazards. They are only required to provide hazard symbols, such as “poison” and “flammable,” and must give information about first aid treatments for those ingredients. Marketing and advertising gimmicks are not proof of the safety of the household products. It is their function to come up with words and phrases that will promote their product. So words like “natural” don’t have anything to do with the safety of the product, and phrases like “Eco-friendly, and “environmentally safe” have no real meaning, other than to sell their products to unsuspecting consumers who only bother to read the pretty part of the label.

    Your Own Chemical Warfare

A Few Tips to Fight Back
There are things you can do immediately to stem this chemical tide. For the next time you go shopping, here are a few green tips that will help you and the planet to a healthier future.

    1. If a product is making cleaning too easy there might be a reason for it. If you are not using any elbow grease, you should be a little weary. Chemicals from these cleaning products have been known to emit fumes even while being stored.

    2. Remember those aerosol cans are still around. People who use air fresheners in excess should know that they contain synthetic fragrances, whose chemical make up has been linked to cancer in rodents.

3.Most dish and detergent soaps are made from petroleum, a nonrenewable synthetic resource, another good reason to go with formulas that are plant-based, biodegradable and contain no phosphates. Your fabric sheets that have “fragrance” on their label, means that they are also petroleum based.

    Zero Chemicals Are Possible

Help Is Just a Click Away
If all of this seems overwhelming to you, do not threat because you can have all the information you and your family needs to end your dependence on chemicals. Zero Chemicals- Chemical Free Living is a two-volume guide to chemical free-living options. You can use it to go completely without chemicals, or just choose what you feel is right for your circumstance. For every chemically based product, there is an equally effective and totally safe natural alternative. And the amazing thing is that you will actually save money with this method. With your new home environment you will see a change in everyone. They will feel a boost to their immune system, an energy explosion, and generally an improvement to their overall health.

These are just some samples of the incredible knowledge gained from these guides. The list goes on and on. I don’t have time obviously, to go into all the benefits these guides provide, so you should check them out yourself.
