If you drive and are not a multi-millionaire, odds are that you are at least a bit concerned with the price of gas. Filling up the tank may be a routine, but for many people it’s a routine that has the potential to break the bank. Ever-rising gas prices in a constantly fluctuating economy don’t help, but there are ways to save on gas despite the hole it may be burning in your budget. By paying attention to your driving habits, keeping aware of where you go to fill up, and following these tips, you will be able to get every last drop out of your gas tank .
1. Slow down, turbo. Driving fast is fun, but it can mean major damage to your allotted fuel allowance. Acceleration can burn up gas quickly, so make sure that when the light turns green you don’t step on it. By easing into it slowly and allowing your car to gain speed without over-revving the engine, you could see an increase in your mileage and a decrease in your gas bill.
2. Lighten your load. Cars weigh a ton (or two) and as such require a great amount of gas to accelerate to begin with. Cut down on the weight of your car by removing an unnecessary items. Oftentimes cars become mobile storage compartments, but though this may be convenient it certainly won’t help your gas mileage.
3. Shop around. Many people seem to remain loyal to “their” gas station, especially if they often go inside to pay rather than paying at the pump. Though this might produce pleasant social interaction, the truth is that saving a few cents per gallon can make quite a difference over time. Instead of waiting until the last minute to fill her up, always be on the lookout for lower prices and top the tank off when you get a good deal.
4. Consolidate your errands. Running out here and there throughout the day not only wastes time, it wastes gasand subsequently money. Your car runs more efficiently after it has warmed up, so getting all the errands done at once will allow your car a chance to reach optimum performance and maximum gas mileage. To get the engine running, try to go to the farthest destination first and work your way back.
5. Explore your navigation. GPS systems are commonly used by today’s drivers, and if you have one you may already have the key to saving gas. Many models offer a variety of routes, from “fastest” to “least distance” and, unbeknownst to some, there is a “most fuel efficient” setting that can effortlessly save you money.
Gas prices have historically risen, not dropped, over timemeaning that this will become a constant issue for the majority of drivers. For many people, driving has become a habit, a way to get from one place to the next, and as such they don’t pay attention to the real cost of transportation. By remaining aware of your driving techniques and the alternatives that are available, you can improve the mileage of your car and give your budget a lift.
