Many motor vehicle owners do not consider recycling that oil with each change but doing so can make a big, positive impact on the environment.
According to the American Petroleum Association, “If you recycle just two gallons of used oil it can generate enough electricity to run the average household for almost 24 hours”. Among the uses listed for recycled motor oil, the association notes engine oil made from refining used oil again as well as forms of energy as the two foremost uses.
How to Recycle Motor OIL
The process for the average consumer is rather simple:
Step 1) Collect the oil
Persons who choose to change their own motor oil simply have to collect the oil in a container when draining it. If your oil change is done professionally, advocates of motor oil recycling suggest that you ask what is done with the oil once removed. More often than not, your mechanic does recycle your old motor oil but if not, you can either request that it be collected and you can recycle it yourself. If necessary, using a mechanic who recycles when doing oil changes can be considered.
Step 2) Take it to a collection facility.
There are over twelve thousand locations that recycle oil in the US. A quick check with the government office in your state or county should solve this problem. Online searches will help as well. If you cannot locate a collection facility then a service station, car dealership or local mechanic shop should be able to recycle it for you. Tip:
1) When collecting oil, avoid containers used for household cleaning products or chemicals. It is best to use a clean, dry, airtime container with a screw top. Plastic one gallon milk and water containers can be used. Containers can also be purchased from your local hardware store or acquired at some locations that accept oil for recycling depending on where you are located.
2) Do not mix the oil with other car fluids.
3) If dirt and debris are present, strain through clean fabric to remove.
