Between 1963 and 1998, 358,214 earthquakes were registered. A lot of earthquakes take place that people don’t even feel. Yet there are around 500,000 earthquakes annually, but only 100,000 of those are actually registered.
Lesser earthquakes happen almost constantly across the earth, in areas such as Guatemala, California, Chile, Alaska, Indonesia, Peru, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Portugal, Greece, New Zealand, Japan and Italy.
It said that a 3.4 – 4.6 strength tremor occurs annually and A 4.7 -5.5 every 10 years. A 5.6 – or larger is estimated to happen only every 100 years.
The outcome of a sudden release of energy in the crust of the earth forms seismic waves we call earthquakes, or tremors.
Although there is no limitation to the size of an earthquake, the biggest earthquake registered is just over 9, making the latest earthquake in Japan one of the larger ever known to man.
Tremors can generate volcanic activity, landslides or tsunamis, which are the most serious force known to mankind.
Scientists claim earthquakes can be created by volcanic activity, mine blasts, landslides, nuclear tests, besides the natural movement of the earth’s tectonic plates.
Some people consider that earthquakes happen in a recurring pattern. There are also times when earthquake clusters are reported. Aftershocks arise as the crust around the displaced fault plane adjusts to the effects of the main shock.
Up to 50 a day aftershocks were registered in Japan, in the days following the main earthquake. Some registered up to 6.3, with many ranging from the 4.6 to high 5′s. Ten days following the big earthquake, Japan was still undergoing up to 13 tremors in a 24 hour period, ranging around the 4.5 – 5 on the Richter scale.
Christchurch, New Zealand experienced a 7.1 earthquake on September 4th 2010. On February 22nd one of the aftershocks was a 6.3 which caused tremendous damage to the city centre.
