When Henry Ford told a New York Times reporter that ethyl alcohol was “the fuel of the future” in 1925, he truly believed it. It was in fact, a sentiment shared by the entire automobile industry. “The fuel of the future is going to come from fruit like that sumach out by the road, or from apples, weeds, sawdust — almost anything,” he said. “There is fuel in every bit of vegetable matter that can be fermented. There’s enough alcohol in one year’s yield of an acre of potatoes to drive the machinery necessary to cultivate the fields for a hundred years.” Of course his forecast was never realized, because by that time any distilled alcohol was outlawed. The 18th Amendment had been in effect since 1919, and
would stay the law of the land until 1933, unfortunately. This time line coincides with the enormous growth of the automobile industry.

The first usage of wind power dates back more than three thousand years. Windmills, which we all know from literature, were used primarily in the west between 1300 and the late 1800′s. None of this means anything to the modern homeowner, considering a wind turbine as a possible alternative energy source, however. What you do need to know is that wind power is not as expensive to impalement as you might think. This may sound funny, but you must determine first, if it is windy enough where you live, to justify a wind turbine. Many use wind power as a back up to solar, while still others use them both in conjunction, as an alternative energy package.

Solar Efficiency Has Increased
If you are researching PV panels, you are someone that knows something about solar energy. For those of you who aren’t quite certain, I will save you a search of an online definition. PV is short for Photovoltaic, and according to Wikipedia, is the field of technology and research related to the application of solar cells for energy by converting solar energy (sunlight, including ultra violet radiation) directly into electricity. There is no need to go into the history of solar energy, accept to point out the advancements in the last five years. The development of transistor and accompanying semiconductor technology, has drastically increased photovoltaic power and efficiency. Today, commonly available solar panels are 12% efficient, which is four times greater than only a few years ago. An average home has more than enough roof area to produce enough solar electricity to supply all of its power needs. You must determine what those needs are. What I mean is, are you just planning on heating your water, or perhaps looking at producing enough energy to meet your entire electrical needs? Are you going off grid, or thinking about selling the excess energy back to the power company?
